Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Continuation of Nursing in Health & Illness II. Further study of common medical-surgical health problems of the client including concepts of mental illness. Incorporates knowledge necessary to make the transition from student to graduate vocational nurse.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Identifies the concepts and principles from the biological, psychological and sociocultural sciences necessary to provide nursing care throughout the life span.
  2. Utilize the nursing process to develop nursing care plans for patients experiencing alterations in cardiac output/tissue perfusion, alterations in hormonal balance, alterations in nutrition, alterations in elimination, sensory/perceptual alterations, and alterations in gas exchange.
  3. Define illness as a situational crisis.
  4. Describe how interpersonal relationships in nursing support the concept of rehabilitation.
  5. Identifies standards and goals necessary for the practice of vocational nursing.

Expected Student Behavior

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTIONS/PROFESSIONALISM:

Adult and professional behavior is expected at all times.

Students are expected to come to class prepared for discussion, case studies, simulation or lecture. Students who have not followed the directions for class preparation will be sent to the NRC to fulfill the class assignment. Students who are sent to the NRC will receive an absence for the day.

Please see the Vocational Nursing Student Handbook and the Amarillo College Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.  Students are expected to follow all policies and procedures of Amarillo College. Student behavior should not be distracting to other students.

Please turn off your cell phones before class starts and leave them offCell phones should be out of eyesight and off of desktops during lecture.  Because these devices are disruptive, do not answer the phone or text during class. Should there be a family situation, which requires your attention, please inform your instructor before class.

You may not record class with audio or video recording equipment (phones) without permission; if permission is granted, you agree to only use said recordings for your own personal educational purposes and will not reproduce, distribute or publicly post the recordings without your instructor’s permission.

Minor children and pets are not permitted to remain unattended on campus or to attend classes with students per the AC student handbook.

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is defined as the following: the use of someone else’s exact words that are neither quoted nor cited; paraphrasing someone else’s words without citing them; or citing someone else’s research without citing it.   Copying any part of another student's care map and submitting as one's own work.

Plagiarism may receive a penalty of a zero. 

Grading Criteria

GRADE SCALE:

  • Exams: (3): 20% each for a total of 60%
  • Quizzes & ATI: : 5%
  • PrepU: (3 units): 5%
  • Medical-Surgical ATI: (1): 10%
  • Final comprehensive (1): 20%

A final grade of 75 is required to pass the course. The following will be used to determine your grade:

 

TESTS AND MAKEUP TESTS

 

  • Tests are computerized and will be taken in the nursing testing center, and are multiple-choice questions.

  • Cell phones and smartwatches are not allowed in the testing center.

  • When entering the testing center, do so quietly and respectfully; you cannot linger in or near the testing center after the test. 

  • Looking toward another student's test paper, computer screen, scratch paper, or communication with another student in any way during testing procedures is considered cheating. The student will be removed from the testing area and given a zero for the exam. 

  • Memorizing questions or answers to share with other students after a test has been taken or reviewed is considered cheating and will not be tolerated.

  • Discussing the test in ANY MANNER is considered cheating and will result in a zero and/or possible dismissal from the program. 

MISSED EXAMS:

  • If the exam is missed, the student must schedule the exam with the instructor, and it must be done within one week of the scheduled exam. Make-up tests may be essay/short answer questions.

  • Make-up exams may result in a deduction of 10 points (this will be at the instructor's discretion).  Failure to notify the instructor in advance of missing an exam may result in a grade of 0 for that exam.

ASSESSMENT TECHNOLOGIES INSTITUTE (ATI)

PRACTICE ASSESSMENTS:

  • ATI assessments will be done throughout the semester. Each student is required to achieve a 90% or better to have successfully mastered the content area.

  • ATI assessments must be completed to a 90% at least once on each assignment by the date scheduled by the instructor.  Failure to complete ATI assignments will result in a zero for the specific assignment. 

ATI EXAMS:

  • ATI proctored exams will be completed throughout the semester. Each student must achieve a Level II or Level III score to have successfully mastered the content area.

  • Students who score Level I or below Level I will have 24 hours to complete a 2-hour ATI focus review (remediation).  Students who do not complete the focused review (remediation) as directed will receive 5 points off of the ATI exam grade. 

ATI Grading

Level 3= 100

Level 2= 80

Level 1= 60

Below-Level 1= 40

ATI and PrepU Online Testing Programs 

  • Students must do their own individual work. 
  • There may be no sharing of answers for either of these programs. 
  • Students are not to write down questions or answers for either of these programs.
  • Students may not take screenshots of any questions for either of these programs. 
  • Failure to complete the required non-proctored ATI/PrepU quizzes will result in failure of the connected course.
  • Any cheating in any form will not be tolerated and can result in course failure. 

PLAGIARISM

  • PrepU must be complete by the date scheduled by the instructor.  If not completed by the closing date listed on the lab sheet and/or the date given to you by your instructor, you will receive a zero for the unit of specified chapters in the grade book. 

  • If a student encounters problems with Prep U or ATI while using the software, they must call ATI or Prep U and talk with the helpdesk and get a trouble ticket number.  Some problems can be fixed by using a laptop or tablet instead of a cell phone when working with these programs.

  • The student is responsible for emailing their instructor (before the due dates) the trouble ticket number and explaining the problem they are having when trying to complete the assignments.

Attendance

ATTENDANCE  POLICY:

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement and mandated hours are required by the Texas State Board of Nursing.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. 90% attendance of classroom lectures is required. Classroom content is 48 hours which will only allow a student to miss 4.8 hours of classroom content. Attendance contracts will be given to students who miss class. If more than 4.8 hours of classroom content is missed, students will receive a deduction of 5 points on the upcoming exam and potential failure for the course.

Required Lab Time

Students are expected to complete an additional 48 hours of lab in order to meet the course requirements. Instructor-mandated lab activities are incorporated into the curriculum and the class calendar. For Prep-U, you will be expected to meet a mastery level of 8 on assigned chapters.

Students are expected to complete and turn in the mandatory lab assignments before leaving the campus for the day or the due date per instructor discretion. 

Please use the provided lab documentation sheet. Failure to complete and turn in the required lab time will result in course failure.

 

Failure to complete any one or more of the ‘set’ of Prep U assignments by the due date will result in a zero for that set of Prep U assignments.

Calendar

Students will receive a class schedule for the semester on the first day of class.

CLASS SCHEDULE:

Week 1-3: Module 1: Cardiovascular. Includes chapters 23-26. Exam at end of module.

Week 5 -6 : Module 2:  Male Reproductive ( chapters 52 & 55), and Genitourinary,( chapters 57-59).  Exam at end of module.

Week 7-9: Module 3: Gastrointestinal ( chapters 44-48), and Integumentary and Burns ( chapters 64-66). Exam at end of module.

Final Comprehensive Exam at the end of the semester.
