Syllabus Information

Textbooks

WW Norton & Company  publisher, second edition by David Emory Shi

The book is not required. It will be of help mainly if you miss a class.

Supplies

Students need a way to take notes. There will be times when you will want to create graphic organizers that will be hard to do electronically. There will be a few nights when you need 2 highlighters. See rules on taking notes on a laptop or other device below.

Electronic devices- Phones and other technology devices have their place and time. In class you will be expected to participate. Dividing your attention will be a detriment to success in this class. Silence phones during class and check them at break time or the end of class.

You may take notes on a laptop, but it will only be allowed for academic use. I do this regularly, so I understand the desire to take notes in this matter. This means during class no email, social media, Internet surfing, video watching, or other non-academic activities. Violations will result in a decreased participation grade. Repeated use will result in the student losing the privilege to take notes on a laptop.

Expected Student Behavior

Expected Student Behavior - You are expected to follow all Amarillo College policies and procedures, particularly those relating to academic integrity and personal conduct.

Be respectful - We will discuss various topics and some are controversial. One aspect of education involves being exposed to ideas that differ from your own and in some cases you will hear ideas you have never encountered before. Be respectful of others in discussion. In History class people reach different conclusions regularly. As long as the facts and data are used with integrity this is acceptable. Wrestling with new ideas and different interpretations has always been an important aspect of education. You will either develop a better understanding of your own ideas or adapt them based on new information.

Do your own work- On the surface it may seem that History class has little bearing on your career goals. It will if thinking and interpreting information is involved. Also, History class makes you a better informed citizen and voter. Knowing how our country has dealt with problems and prosperity in the past provides a way to evaluate issues and candidates today.

If you have taken ideas and answers from others you have cheated yourself of education as well as removed your voice from it. One of these days I may cross a bridge you built, place myself or loved ones in your care, or rely upon you for good service. You owe to others to be the best educated person you can be in your career.

Grading Criteria

Grading Criteria

After the first class there will be a quiz on the lesson from the previous class with the exception of the class combining lessons 11 and 12 for a total of 13 quizzes. Missing a quiz will be recorded as a 0. The average on these quizzes will count for 50% of the final grade. The three lowest scores will be dropped; I will drop only one score of 0. Quizzes will be taken on paper.

Quiz time- Quizzes will begin about 8:00 each night. Students will have 20 minutes before class resumes to take the quiz and take a break. Upon completion of your quiz lease exit the room until all have finished or break time ends.

Missing quizzes- Quizzes missed before April 14th can be made up that night. Speak with me to determine if you will arrive early or stay late that night to make up missed quizzes. Quizzes missed from April 14 until May 10 will be made up on the final class meeting on May 12.

Homework -There will be 4-5 written homework assignments. These assignments will count for 20% of the final grade. The homework assignments will be on Blackboard and checked by Safe Assign for plagiarism when it is turned in. The lowest grade will be dropped.

A Safe Assign score greater than 25% should be reworked to be under that level.

A Safe Assign score of 25-30% will be deducted 10 points.

A Sae Assign score over 30% will not be graded. It must be redone or earn a 0.

Paper - This class includes a Historical Thinking paper that counts for 20% of the final grade. This assignment will be found on Blackboard and turned in through Safe Assign to check for plagiarism. See the course calendar to see when the assignment will become available and when it is due.

The safe assign percentages will be bumped up 5 points because quoting the primary sources will show up as being copied.

Extra credit- There will be no extra credit awarded in the class.

Students caught cheating on quizzes and assignments will receive a failing grade (F) for that assignment and may face institutional discipline.

Attendance - The final 10% of the grade will be based on attendance and participation. I take attendance at each class meeting but record only one attendance grade per week. Students attending and participating in both class meetings in a week will earn a 100 for the week. One absence or non-participatory class will earn a 50 for the week. Students will not be docked points for the first two absences. Absences for illness are included in these two grace absences. Attendance and participation are critical elements of education, so they will be expected.

Grading Scale -

A = 89.5 and above

B = 79.5-89.4

C = 79.4-69.5

D = 69.4-59.5

F = below 59.4         [note:  any average ending in .5 or above is rounded up]

Withdrawals: You must initiate the withdrawal process with your instructor.

In order to initiate the withdrawal process, you must fill out the required form.  You can access the form in your Blackboard class under the "Withdrawal Form" tab.  You will need to get the instructor's signature in order to drop the class.

Administrative Drop:  Any student who has not attended class by the census date will be administratively dropped from the course by the Registrar's Office.
