Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) PHYS-1402-DC001 College Physics II


Prerequisite: College Physics I or instructor consent

Course Description

Fundamental principles of physics, using algebra and trigonometry; the principles and applications of electricity and magnetism, including circuits, electrostatics, electromagnetism, waves, sound, light, optics and modern physics topics; with emphasis on problem solving. Laboratory activities will reinforce lecture content.

The following supplies should be brought to class every day:

  • bound composition notebook with “quadrille” (grid) paper in it (NO SPIRALS!!)
    • one for labs, one for notes
  • flash drive to save lab reports and projects on
  • pencils
  • scientific calculator (a graphing calculator is recommended)
  • an AP Physics 2 review book of any type IF you plan to take the AP exam

Student Performance

After completing the lecture part of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the learning objectives listed in the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain and apply the concepts of electrostatics and electric fields.
  2. Explain and utilize the principles of current, resistance, and voltage in circuits.
  3. Explain and apply the concept of magnetic fields.
  4. Explain and apply the concept of electromagnetic waves.
  5. Know and utilize the principles of reflection and refraction in optical system.
  6. Explain and apply the concepts of geometric optics and image formation.
  7. Explain and apply uses of optical instruments.
  8. Explain the concept of special relativity.
  9. Explain the basic concepts of quantum mechanics.
  10. Explain the basic principles of atomic structures.


After completing the lab part of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  1. Conduct basic laboratory experiments involving electromagnetics, optics, photoelectric effect, and atomic spectra.
  2. Prepare laboratory reports that clearly communicate experimental information in a logical and scientific manner.
  3. Relate physical observations and measurements to theoretical principles.
  4. Evaluate the accuracy of physical measurements and the potential sources of error in the measurements.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to be respectful to everyone in the classroom and exhibit responsibility with behavior as well as assignments.  Students are expected to work hard to understand the physics they are learning and attend tutorials if needed.  Students are expected to be on time to class and have their materials every day. Electronic devices may only be used during class with permission from the instructor.

Grading Criteria

This one-semester college course will be taught over an entire high school year. At the high school there are two semesters so the final course grade will be an average of 6 6-Weeks Grades (75%) and 2 Semester Exams (25%).

Six Weeks Grades – 75% of final grade

Semester Exams – 25% of final grade

  • spring semester exam in May

Additional Information

  • ALL students enrolled in this course will take a comprehensive final exam at the end of each semester. Test questions will be similar to those on the AP Physics 2 Exam.
  • Work missed due to an absence is to be made up in a timely manner.  You are allowed one day per day of school missed for a non-school-related absence.  If you miss class due to a school activity the work will be turned in before the absence or the day immediately following the absence.  Please contact your instructor as soon as possible.
  • Students may correct lab reports to earn back ½ of the points that were lost. Corrections MUST be done during a scheduled tutoring session within ONE WEEK of the due date.

  • B – 79.5-89.49%
  • C – 69.5-79.49%
  • D – 59.5-69.49%
  • F – 0-59.49%


Since this is a dual-credit course at a high school, attendance is required per the Texas Education Code.

Work missed due to an absence is to be made up in a timely manner.  You are allowed one day per day of school missed for a non-school-related absence.  If you miss class due to a school activity the work will be turned in before the absence or the day immediately following the absence.  Please contact your instructor as soon as possible if you have questions or need an extension.

Tests will be administered the 3rd and 6th week of each grading period following Amarillo High School's testing schedule and as required by AHS administration.

This class will follow AISD’s calendar for AP Physics 2.

This course follows the AP Physics 2 Framework in addition to the state requirements for Physics 1402.
