Medical Assisting Practicum

The nature of the practicum is such that students are involved in the direct delivery of patient care. The primary purpose of any course is to provide education for the students. However, when direct patient care is involved in the learning experience, the safety and well-being of patients are also of absolute concern.

If, in the instructor’s professional judgment, a student is unable to provide care to patients, and if this deficit is such that it cannot be remedied in the given practicum time, the student will be removed from the practicum setting, will receive an unsatisfactory grade and will not be permitted to take the National Exam.

Instructional content in the Medical Assisting Practicum course will focus on clinical procedures utilized within the medical offices.  Major components will include emergency medical care, the physical exam, basic pharmacology, and administration of medication.   Students will participate in a work-based clinical externship within a medical office or equivalent healthcare facility.  Due to healthcare industry standards, exemplary attendance is mandatory.  All content standards and objectives must be mastered before students are eligible to attain established credentials and/or industry validation.  Students will utilize problem-solving techniques and participate in hands-on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts.  Teachers will provide each student with real-world learning opportunities and instruction related to the study of medical assisting.

Learning Objectives:

Apply the theory, concepts and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.

The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of practicum eligibility requirements, conform to professional standards for healthcare workers, comply with required health regulations including proof of CPR and immunization status. They will wear proper clinical attire, report to practicum site on time and ready to work.

The student will:

1. notify the practicum site and the instructor if they are going to be absent or late.

2.  conform to policies regarding the performance of skills and scope of responsibility/practice.

3.  correctly and safely perform entry-level procedures under the supervision of an instructor or practicum site preceptor.

4. request assistance or clarification as needed.

5. organize and effectively manage time

6.  accurately and efficiently complete documentation required for practicum

7.  participate in practicum evaluation process

Student performance grade will be based in part, on evaluations from the practicum sites

Log in using the AC Connect Portal

In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Students will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times while at the practicum site.

If the student is at the practicum site not in complete clean uniform including proper shoes and Amarillo College name tag, the student will be sent home and not receive credit for that clinical day.  Multiple offenses will cause the student to receive a failing grade.

All of the hours missed must be made up! This can cause you to get an incomplete in the course and cause you to set your schedule of classes behind.

While at the practicum site the student will refrain from becoming involved in any gossip or discussions of personal life.

If for any reason the student is reprimanded at the practicum site, the student will have to meet with the instructor/practicum coordinator to find a solution.

Remember this is a privilege to be allowed this training in working facilities.

You are a guest and must remember to act like one.

Put your best foot forward and leave a good impression.
