Expected Student Behavior

AVOID ANY APPEARANCE OF CHEATING. The appearance of cheating may result in a grade of zero for the exam or quiz and possibly a failing grade for the course. Hats and earphones are not to be worn during quizzes or tests. Cell phones and Smart Watches are not allowed during quizzes or tests. Cell phones should be set to silent during lecture and lab, and texting during lecture is not allowed. If you must take an important call or have an emergency text you must reply to, please inform the instructor before class begins. Leaving during a quiz or test is not allowed. If you leave the classroom I assume you are done with your quiz or test. Any disruptive behavior may lead to removal from the lab or lecture.

Grading Criteria

Grading
100-89.5% = A
89.4-79.5% = B
79.4-69.5% = C
69.4-59.5% = D
59.4% or below = F

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS/EXAMINATIONS: The student will have 3 hours of lecture for every 3 hours of laboratory. The lecture accounts for 50% of the final grade, laboratory section accounts for 25% of the final grade and the final exam accounts for the final 25% of the grade.

Lecture exams: Lecture exams and quizzes are 50% of the total grade for the semester. At least five exams will be given, covering both lecture and reading material. Each exam will be worth 10%, the lowest exam grade will be dropped. Lecture quizzes will be given once a week online. You will have two attempts at each quiz. Each quiz and exam is timed, so you MUST study. Quizzes or Exams will not be reset for technical problems. The lowest lecture quiz will be dropped. The average of  lecture quizzes will be equal to one lecture exam (10% of total grade). NO MAKEUP EXAMS OR QUIZZES will be given. A missed exam becomes a zero or the dropped grade, and a missed quiz becomes a zero. Each misspelled word will result in loss of 1/4 of a point.

Laboratory: 25% of the total grade for the semester. Lab score will be determined by laboratory quizzes and 3 lab practicals. Lab quizzes will be given each class day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Late arrivals to class may cause you to miss the quiz and earn a zero for the quiz that day. Quizzes will start promptly at 9:30am and you will have 10 minutes to complete the quiz. If you come in at 9:35am, you will have 5 minutes to complete the quiz. The average of your lab quiz grades will be equal to one lab practical grade. One lab quiz grade will be dropped.  Note: The remaining class time after a quiz or test will be lecture on the next unit of material with extra credit opportunities within the class period. Each misspelled word will result in loss of 1/4 of a point. NO LAB PRACTICAL OR QUIZ MAKEUPS.

Final Exam: 25% of the total grade for the semester. It is a comprehensive exam that will be taken on Thursday, July 1st at 9:30am.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  It is therefore the responsibility of the student to attend class. Absences result in zeros for any missed quizzes, exams, presentations or participation grades. If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course, you will receive an “F” for the course. A grade of “W” will be given for student-initiated drops or withdrawals. Texas law now mandates that students may only drop or withdraw 6 times in their entire college careers, excluding drops prior to the census date.

Grievance Procedure: If a student has a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor. If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Melissa Bates on the Moore County Campus, the Biology Department Chairperson, the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Vice President of Academic Affairs and the college President, IN THAT ORDER.

Expectations: Every student will take personal responsibility for his/her learning in this course. To succeed, each student must...

    Attend all class meetings.

Set aside several hours each week to complete assignments and study for quizzes, tests, and lab practicals.

Read each chapter we cover in class. Skimming over the material before you watch the lecture video & then reading the chapter after          the lecture will help you be successful.

Participate in lecture and lab by asking questions. You can email me or text me if you do not feel comfortable speaking in class.

Demonstrate college-level effort and behavior. I expect college-level work on each assignment you complete.

Complete all assignments when due. Late assignments are not accecpted.

Respondus Lockdown Browser & Monitor
Respondus Lockdown Browser & Monitor must be used to complete all online exams and the syllabus quiz!
Amarillo College now requires all online exams and quizzes to be completed using a web browser called Respondus Lockdown Browser. This browser functions similar to other web browsers; however, it prevents a student from opening up other programs, web pages, notes, files, etc during an exam or quiz. This helps to maintain academic honesty, even when students are participating through online and distance education courses.

You will be required to 1) download and install Respondus Lockdown Browser on your computer, and 2) only use Respondus Lockdown Browser & Monitor when you attempt quizzes and exams, including the Final Exam. If you try to start an exam or quiz using Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc, Blackboard will prevent you from starting the assessment until you navigate to the assessment using Respondus Lockdown Browser.

You can the download information once you log-in to Blackboard, and then click on “Student Tools” at the top right of your Blackboard page. Then, on the Student Tools page, you can find the Respondus Lockdown Browser information on the module on the left side of the screen. I have also posted some information on regarding Respondus Lockdown Browser in the Content folder.

Here is the Link explaining why you must use Respondus Lockdown Browser.
Here is the Link to Respondus Lockdown Browser download.
Here is the Link to Respondus Lockdown Browser installation tutorial.

You must also use Responds Monitor for each exam and quiz. This means you will need to set up your webcam and successfully initiate it for the software. The webcam will take a photo of you and use it to identify you throughout the test. You will also be required to use the webcam to do an environment check to show you have no books or notes around you before you start the exam or quiz. If you fail to do so, significant points will be reduced on your quiz or exam or you could even be given a zero!  The webcam must be focused on you for the entirety of the exam. Leaving the area or changing the view of the camera can result in loss of points or even a zero for the exam.  When taking an exam using Respondus, no part of the process is optional.

If you have ANY issues, errors, problems, or questions, please contact Amarillo College IT department as soon as possible!!! Contact your instructor about Respondus only if the AC IT Department is unable to resolve your problems or issues.
