Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) COSC-1336-001 Programming Fundamentals I


Course Description

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of structured programming, and provides a comprehensive introduction to programming for computer science and technology majors. Topics include software development methodology, data types, control structures, functions, arrays and the mechanics of running, testing and debugging. This course assumes computer literacy.

Student Performance

Course Description: This course focuses on the object-oriented programming paradigm, emphasizing the definition and use of classes along with fundamentals of object-oriented design. The course includes basic analysis of algorithms, searching and sorting techniques, and an introduction to software engineering processes. Students will apply techniques for testing and debugging software. This course is included in the Field of Study Curriculum for Computer Science.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
Identify and explain a programming development lifecycle, including planning, analysis,design, development, and maintenance.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of object-oriented programming by using structsand classes in software projects.
Use object-oriented programming techniques to develop executable programs that include elements such as inheritance and polymorphism.
Document and format code in a consistent manner.
Apply basic searching and sorting algorithms in software design.
Apply single- and multi- dimensional arrays in software.
Use a symbolic debugger to find and fix runtime and logical errors in software.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of programming methodologies, including object-oriented, structured, and procedural programming.
Describe the phases of program translation from source code to executable code.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their scholastic work. Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, or dishonesty may be excluded from class with a grade of  F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College. The faculty of the CIS Department reserves the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test by reproducing any specific section or all of the test in question.
CS/CIS computers and servers should be used only for completion of academic requirements of the CS and CIS departments at Amarillo College.
Any action that compromises the computer systems at Amarillo College can result in a grade of "F" in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

Grading Criteria

Your semester grade (90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, Below 60 F) will be calculated as follows:

  1.  Attendance 5%
2.  Lab Average 25%
3.  Midterm Exam (on-campus) 35%
4.  Final Exam (on-campus) 35%


The Lab Average will be calculated as:

  1. All work will be graded at the deadline.
  2. Late work will not be accepted/graded.
  3. Lowest lab grade can be replaced by your attendance grade.

If access to campus is restricted for any reason and we are not able to take either/both of the seated, on-campus exams, the final grade will be calculated without the missing exam(s).

No grades will be recorded (and late penalties will apply) until students complete the contact/contract form ("lab0") which will be distributed by the instructor.

Note your in-class attendance counts as a grade and can also replace your lowest lab grade!

Also note that you will be required to come to campus to take a seated Midterm Exam and Final Exam. 

Makeup exams will not be given.

Note that this class will require a considerable amount of time outside of class to complete all of the course work!

If you stop working on the class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by the deadline, you will receive an F for the course.  The deadline for dropping a class at AC is published in the official Amarillo College Schedule of Classes.
