Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to be ON TIME, PREPARED for class, and PARTICIPATE DURING CLASS in a positive manner. Students are expected to read the syllabus and to sign and turn in a course contract before the first exam can be taken by the student. Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to the following: the use of cellular phones, texting, making offensive remarks, talking, use of personal music systems, doing homework or other personal projects during class time, or engaging in any other form of distraction. For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and student responsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook http://sites.actx.edu/catalog/notices/. Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or Student Rights & Responsibilities will be subject to disciplinary action.
Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism: Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student’s paper, copying from the homework solutions manual, or using any unauthorized sources of information while taking an exam or quiz. Any student caught cheating on an assignment will receive a grade of zero for the assignment. If a student is caught cheating on a test, a grade of zero will be assigned with no chance of the final replacing the grade.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.
Daily Homework:
Daily homework assignments will consist of online assignments. Online assignments will be submitted using MyMathLab and will be automatically graded on the website. Details on how to register and enroll in MyMathLab will be given in class. Assignment deadlines will be indicated in MyMathLab with each homework set. I do not accept late homework. (To allow for missed assignments, the 1 lowest online homework grade will be dropped.)
Portfolio Problems:
Portfolio problems will consist of completing written assignments covering the concepts we have discussed in lecture. Usually these problems require a deeper understanding of the basic concepts and students must apply critical thinking skills. Portfolio assignments will be submitted in class and graded by the instructor. Detailed instructions on format for portfolio assignments will be given in class and posted in Blackboard. Assignment deadlines will be announced as material is covered. I do not accept late portfolio assignments.
Exams:
Four major exams and a mandatory comprehensive final will be given. No late exams will be given, no matter the reason. If you know in advance that you will be gone during an exam, you MUST make arrangements with the instructor to take the exam early. If an exam is missed, the grade will be replaced with the score you make on the final exam. This policy applies to one exam only. If you miss more than one exam, a grade of zero will be averaged for the other missed exams. If you do not miss any exam during the semester, the grade on the mandatory final exam, if higher, will replace the lowest major exam grade.
In accordance with Mathematics Department policy, students scoring below a 70 on any major exam will be required to spend at least one hour in the Math Outreach Center. This must be completed by the time specified by your instructor.
Final Exam:
The mandatory comprehensive final exam will be given the last week of the semester. The exact date and time will be given later in the semester.
Your course average (A 100 - 90, B 89 - 80, C 79 - 70, D 69 - 60, F Below 60) will be calculated using the following scale:
Homework (drop 1) 15%
Attendance 5%
Portfolio Problems 5%
Reviews 5%
Exams 55%
Final Exam 15%
I DO NOT give extra credit work. Additionally, all graded work must be in PENCIL.
Regular attendance is essential in a math class. It is during class that questions about homework, new assignments & announcements, and course content will be covered.
Please remember the deadline for dropping a 6-week summer II 2022 class is August 4. Amarillo College has implemented a new drop policy requiring you to contact your instructor before you will be allowed to drop and get the necessary drop form. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.
This is a tentative schedule subject to change by the instructor.
