Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Application of communication theory to interpersonal relationship development, maintenance and termination in relationship contexts including friendships, romantic partners, families and relationships with co-workers and supervisors.

Course Objectives:

 Through reading the current literature, researching recent communication findings, and participating in group and individual oral assignments, the student will:

  1. Exhibit understanding of interpersonal theories and principles.
  2. Demonstrate ability to analyze and critique verbal and nonverbal interactions in mediated and face-to-face contexts.
  3. Identify perceptual processes as they relate to self and others.
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking ability by effectively researching, evaluating and applying communication theories in oral and/or written assignments.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the relevance of cross-cultural, co-cultural, gender and age influences on human communication.
  6. Demonstrate ability to identify, evaluate and apply conflict styles and conflict management techniques in dyads and/or groups.
  7. Identify types of and barriers to effective listening.

          15% - Reflections & assignments ( Syllabus quiz, self tests, additional assignments, reports, etc.)

Attendance

1.  Regular attendance is essential.  This class is interaction oriented.  3 absences will

 result in a loss of one letter from your final grade(if you have an A and are

absent 3 times, you will end up with a B).  An additional 3 absences will lower

grade another letter. And so on, and on.

 

2.  I can’t stand tardiness.  If you are late more than 6 times, you will lose one letter

grade from your final grade.  You are considered late if class has already started

when you arrive.   See #1 for example.

Additional Information

We all experience unexpected difficulties.  If you are going to be absent or late, and

you know ahead of time, let me know ahead of time.  I will not count you absent. If you don’t know ahead of time, keep me informed.  However, if you are absent, excused or not, more than 4 times, your grade will suffer at the discretion of the instructor.

4.  Any makeup or late work will NOT BE ACCEPTED unless student makes

            arrangements with the instructor. This means all due dates pertaining to the

class, for the classroom or online.

5. Anyone using an electronic device for anything other than in class exercises will be

    asked to leave the class.

6.  Discussions in this class may contain adult (18 years of age and older), mature

     content, including but not inclusive to questionable language, subject matter of sex

     and violence, and difference of opinion.  If you are not of age or do not wish to hear

     this content, then you may need to excuse yourself or withdraw from the class.

7. The last day to drop this class on AC's master calendar .
