Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Life-Span Growth and Development is a study of social, emotional, cognitive and physical factors and influences of a developing human from conception to death.

Student Performance

  • Learn and gain mastery over the basic facts and research findings, terminology, principles, and theories important in the various areas of lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Develop understanding, skills, and techniques for analyzing human behavior using a scientific approach.
  • Gain a basic understanding of the interaction between genetic and environmental influences on human development.
  • Gain a basic understanding of physical, cognitive, emotional and social development across the lifespan.
  • Gain a basic understanding of family, school and work achievement, and death and dying as they apply to lifespan development.
  • Analyze current issues and controversies in the field of developmental psychology.
  • Practice and develop critical thinking skills, and written communications skills.

Expected Student Behavior

This 3-hour course is a hybrid style course.  Instruction in a hybrid course is delivered 50% online and 50% face-to-face contact. A sizeable portion of this course is completed outside of class. In class time involves lecture, discussions, activities, and out of class participation.  The course is completed within 8 weeks. Course format will consist of the following:

  • Mondays: Talk About It
    • Discussion orientated, activity based, creative interaction with content
  • Wednesdays: Think it Through
    • Case studies and student led discussions

How are grades calculated?

  • Let us say, for example, that you made the following grades in the course:
    • Quiz 1 = 82; Quiz 2 = 85; Quiz 3 = 93; Quiz 4 = 78
    • Post and Respond (PR): PR1: 88; PR1: 76; D3: 88; PR4: 70
    • Discussions: D1: 91; D2: 88; D3: 92; D4: 65
    • Reading Logs (3 total): 80 + 91 + 88
    • Service Learning Project = 100
    • GROW Project: 85
    • Final Exam: 83

  • Here is how you would do the math:
    • Average the Quiz grades: 82 + 85 + 93 + 78 = 338/4 = 84.5
    • Average the PR grades: 88 + 76 + 88 + 70 = 322/4 = 80.5
    • Average discussion grades: 91 + 88 + 92 + 65 = 336/4 = 84
    • Average the Reading Logs (3 total): 80 + 91 + 88 = 259/3 = 86.33

  • Then multiply by the percentage:
    • 84.5 X .10 = 8.5 (Quizzes)
    • 82.3 X .15 = 12.3 (Post and Responds)
    • 84 X .15 = 12.6 (Discussions)
    • 86.33 X .15 = 12.9 (Reading Logs)
    • 100 X .10 = 10 (Service-Learning Project)
    • 85 X .20 = 17 (GROW Project)
    • 83 X .15 = 12.5 (Final Exam)

  • Now, add the numbers for each category: 
    • 8.5 + 12.3 + 12.6 + 12.9 + 10 + 17 + 12.5 = 85.8 = B (Course Grade)

Attendance

  • 85% attendance is required to pass
    • REGARDLESS the reason
      • 85% of 16 = 13.6
      • 2/3 absences
  • Attendance is taken daily.
  • Students should attend class twice a week (M and W). Role will additionally be taken through in-class participation, discussions, and submission of reading logs.
  • Updates and assignments are subject to change at the instructor’s discretion and should be monitored daily online.

ALL technological use should be limited to course related content when instructed to access. No photo imaging is allowed at any point throughout the entirety of the course. The instructor may limit technology at various points due to improper usage.
