The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Quality hard cover sketchbook, the same kind I recommend in all my classes,
9” x 12” or larger with your choice of drawing media such as Sharpie® pens, ebony pencil, markers, and color penciles.

Acrylic Paints. We will use heavy body, 2 oz. or larger tubes or equivalent acrylic paints. The Liquitex® brand or Gumbacher® brand are recommended and are available in Amarillo or by order. Cheap brands sometimes are not heavy body and do not have enough pigment, and may not give you the quality needed.

Purchase these REQUIRED colors in acrylic paints
ivory black
titanium white
alizarin crimson red or pthalo red (primary red)
cadmium Yellow medium (primary yellow)
cobalt or pthalo blue (primary blue)
cadmium orange (secondary orange)
viridian or pthalo green (secondary green)
dioxazine purple (secondary violet)
burnt sienna (particularly for figure painting)

In addition these colors are optional but recommended:
cadmium red
cerulean blue
ultramarine blue
sap green
yellow ochre

When painting areas, often in abstracts, large containers of acrylics or latex in specific colors may be purchased in art stores or house paint stores.

Painting mixing pallets, ONE of the following:
Butcher tray, heavy metal covered with white ceramic or enamel
Tupperware style plastic container with lid
Wood or plastic artist painter’s pallet

Brushes
Natural and synthetic stiff acrylic/oil brushes including flats, filberts, and rounds in large, medium and small sizes. Also a flexible rigger brush is required, and a fan brush is also desirable. Since brushes are not standardized, it is recommend you see examples in class before purchasing. Suggested are natural bristle or synthetic brushes that provide the resilient spring needed for the best performance with heavy bodied acrylics. The rigger brush is more pliant and used for painting lines and fine details. It was created to paint the “rigging“ in sailing ships

Stretched canvases

Two  24” x 36” or 24” x 30” or larger pre-stretched canvases with 1-1/2” gallery wrap deep thickness

Two 18” x 24” pre-stretched canvases, gallewith 1-1/2” gallery wrap deep thickness

We will be busy, so don’t miss classes, don’t be tardy, and don’t leave early. you may use the studio before and after classes. You may paint at home, but that does not replace mandatory class attendance. During the semester there will be several hours of learning to prepare canvases, such as lectures and demonstrations. You will learn how to use various painting techniques, mix colors, make frames, and demonstrate hanging an exhibition. You will learn how to market your art and how to become a full-time artist.

You must work more hours than the time during class. You will need to stay or come back to the classroom painting studio and paint, which I will arrange to have open for you before and after class yours Monday through Friday. You may paint at home and in the painting studio, but that does not excuse you from attending class for the full scheduled times and days.

There are specific assignments, so you must follow directions, do the research, preliminary work, and properly prepare the paintings for exhibit. You must present your work to ] visiting artist “judges” in person or n a “Painting Showcase” — a digital PowerPoint show put together by the instructor. You will also prepare and provide an artist statement for the judge and instructor during the showcase.
