Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

Vistas Introducción a La Lengua Española (6th Edition) by José A. Blanco

Vistas 6e SSPlus + wSAM Code (36M)

978-1-54330-639-2

You *MUST* buy these materials NEW. It is an access code to your textbook, practice, readings, homework, and tests. Please buy ONLY from AC bookstores or direct from publisher via the link above. DO NOT TRY TO BUY MATERIALS ANY OTHER WAY! You are likely to get the wrong materials if you do.

You do not need to purchase anything if you have an unexpired VHL license. If you purchased materials from the AC bookstores or via the link above, your license is good for 36 months.

You may choose to purchase a printed copy of the book for convenience, but keep in mind that all information necessary for completing this course is found online through the access code.

Printed books can be found online very cheaply. They do not subsittute for the required materials above. A 5th edition is fine (and very, very cheap) for reference. The 4th and lower editions are too old. Check local used bookstores and add.com for availability.

Helpful videos for accessing the online book, redeeming your access code, and creating your account can be found at: https://www.vhlcentral.com/screencasts/student

Supplies

You will need speakers or a headset to listen to audio portions of various assignments. You are required to have a microphone to record your voice and a camera for video assignments. Speaking assignments will not be accepted via any platform other than the vhlcentral.com website.

Please test your microphone! If it is choppy, has static, or otherwise has limitations that will prevent your professor from completely understanding you, get a better microphone quickly.

English Grammar for Students of Spanish: The Study Guide for Those Learning Spanish, 7th edition – Learn Spanish (O & H Study Guides) 7th Edition

Older editions are fine; many libraries have copies as well

Student Performance

Readings, Practice, Homework, and Tests:

Reading, writing, speaking, listening, and culture are all practiced, assigned as homework, and tested.

All work may be done on most computers. See VHL for technical requirements.

It is strongly discouraged to attempt to complete any work on a phone. If you do, and you encounter technical problems, no resets, re-dos, or any other accommodations will be provided. You do so at your own risk.

ADVICE: Don't use a phone. Ever.

Course Structure:

  • The course is based on the text listed above. You are responsible for the assignments in each chapter and should review the material indicated on or before the indicated dates.
  • As a continuation of SPAN 1411, Learning Outcomes for SPAN 1412 are:

·Engage in conversations using level-appropriate grammatical structures including narrating events that take place in the past.

·Demonstrate understanding of level-appropriate spoken Spanish produced by Spanish speakers of diverse origins.

·Write simple to moderately complex sentences using level-appropriate grammatical structures and organize them into cohesive paragraphs.

·Read and comprehend level-appropriate authentic texts.

·Identify and discuss traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic world.

·Compare and contrast the traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic word with characteristics of their own culture.

  • You must use the grammar and vocabulary learned to date!

DO NOT USE GRAMMAR/VOCAB WE HAVE NOT LEARNED!

We are following specific course of learning so if you use grammar/vocab we have not learned it is not possible to tell if you have actually learned that grammar/vocab. Most times the question will contain the tense and grammar that is expected in your answers so be sure to read the questions carefully.

Be sure to use complete sentences when instructed to do so.

If you insist on using grammar/vocab we have not learned, you will get a zero on that question/essay. When you use grammar/vocab we have not learned you immediately create suspicion of cheating – how did you learn this grammar? You also do not show that you have learned what was covered in the chapter.

HUGE HINT! The tests cover what we just learned including some items from previous chapters.

If, after all of this explanation, you still (!) insist on using grammar/vocab we have not learned you will still (!) get a zero. Don’t do that. There is nothing on a test or HW that cannot be done with what we have learned.

If you “already know Spanish” take a CLEP or challenge exam and get exempted from this (and possibly other) classes. It’s cheaper, faster, and if you “fail” the exam nobody has to know – they just put you back in this class without recording a grade.

You are expected to do your own work on tests with NO HELP from books, phones, friends, the internet, etc.

If you are suspected of any impropriety you will receive a zero on the entire test and be required to meet with the professor by phone or video conference within three business days. If you fail, or choose not to, meet with the professor, the zero will stand and you will lose your privilege to take tests online.

This could prove quite difficult as you will have to arrange to get to the campus that the professor chooses to take your exams. That's going to be tough if you don't live in Amarillo but it is the consequence of cheating. Don't risk it.

If impropriety occurs again, you will be assigned an F for the course and subject to disciplinary action.

  • Cheating includes using anything other than your own brain - nothing - NOTHING - else AT ALL.

  • ADVICE: Don't cheat.

Expected Student Behavior

Academic Honesty:

Students are responsible for adhering to the highest standard of behavior when it comes to honesty and plagiarism. A student who engages in scholastic dishonesty which includes but is not limited to cheating, copying and pasting answers from any source, plagiarism, the use of online translators, and collusion, will receive a zero for the entire assignment. If a second offense is committed, an F in course will result. Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Review the section on academic dishonesty in the Amarillo College Handbook.

Students are to take all tests and quizzes CLOSED BOOK. NO HELP.

Grading Criteria

Grading System

Grading is based on the following:

**Students must earn a grade of C or better in order to continue to Spanish 2311.

GRADE SCALE:

4 Tests 70%

Homework 30%

Course Grade Calculation

Grade             A                     B                     C                     D                     F

Percentage   90-100%        89.99-80%     79.99-70%     69.99-60%     59.99-0%

Final grades are not “rounded” upward in order to give students a higher grade than has actually been earned.

Extra credit

Students who complete 75% or more of the HW per module on VHL will be given an extra (unearned) 5 points for that HW.

No additional extra credit is available.

Tests and Final Exam

The dates for the tests and final exam are indicated in Blackboard. The tests cover vocabulary, grammar and cultural themes studied in the previous chapters. As is the nature of learning a foreign language, all tests are comprehensive.

There are no re-tests or make-up exams.

All testing is done online in VHL. You will see them in the VHL Calendar. Click when ready to take. They are all timed at about 1 hour depending on which version of the test you get. Not every student always get the same tests.

Tests must be submitted by the deadlines. Although tests may be available after the deadlines, it is your responsibility to complete on or before the deadlines. Only students with approved AC accommodations directives explicitly stating that tests can be taken after a deadline may do so. If you take a test after a deadline, you will receive a zero.

You must use accents and other diacritical marks when they are needed.

Deadlines are given for each test and chapter HW under each module of the course. The professor will not remind you of the deadlines. They are given now and you are expected to plan your calendar accordingly.

DEADLINES ARE NOT EXTENDED FOR ANY REASON!

A deadline is the last possible second you can turn something in for a grade. If you go over - even by just a few seconds - YOUR WORK WILL BE LATE and will not be counted! Don't let this happen to you. Don't start an assignment or test at 11:30pm. Start early. Pace yourself. If you miss the deadline, that's it. THAT IS IT! The assignments will not be accepted late, even if just a few seconds. You are given the deadlines far in advance and it is your responsibility to meet them.

Since all tests are announced and available from the 1st day of class, there are no make up tests. Plan your calendar accordingly.

Re-tests are not given. Students are expected to demonstrate their mastery of the material on the initial tests only.

Missed or late work

Written homework must be turned in one VHL by the deadlines. No work turned in late will be given a grade.

Attendance

No attendance required.

Deadlines must be met without question. They are set as late as possible, allowing plently of time to complete work.

If you wait until the last second, you are unlikely to finish. If you start something (test, HW, etc.) and go over the deadline (start at 11:45 and finish after 11:59pm), your work is late and YOU WILL GET A ZERO!

Advice: Don't wait until! Work AHEAD!
