Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Expected Student Behavior

  1. Please make every effort to be on time.  Late arrivals are very disrupting to the class and to a proper leaning environment.
  2. The student should read assignments prior to class and be prepared to discuss topics covered in class.  Students will be called on to share their understanding of topics.
  3. Assigned homework is to be completed before class.  Homework cannot be completed in class unless the instructor gives permission.
  4. Exams and weekly quizzes will be handed out at the beginning of class.  In the case of major exams, students may begin the exam when they arrive, but  will have the same turn-in deadline as everyone else in the class.  In the case of quizzes, if the student arrives late, he/she will not be allowed to take the quiz and will receive a grade of 0.
  5. CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF OR BE IN VIBRATE ONLY MODE, AND PUT AWAY DURING CLASS AND EXAMS.  Cell phones may be confiscated by the instructor and returned to the student after class. If a cell phone rings during a major exam, a 10% score deduction will be implemented when the exam is graded.
  6. Calculators may be used during class and exams. The instructor will provide the calculators.
  7. Disruptive behavior may lead to the student being asked to leave the classroom.  If his happens, the student will not be allowed to return until after a counseling session with the Program Director. Disruptive behavior may consist of, but not be limited to: private conversations, unauthorized mobile phone usage, sleeping in class, and rude or disrespective behavior towards the instructor or other students.
  8. Cheating on exams or copying the work of others on assignments will result in a grade of 0 for the exam or assignment and will severely jeopardize successful completion of this course (see AC RC Student Handbook).

Grading Criteria

Required Work

  1. Five (5) major exams
  2. Writing assignment (Due:  Oct. 26)
  3. Weekly quizzes
  4. "Get Ready" TMC Game

Categories of class work will be weighted in the determination of the final course grade:

Exams/Quizzes/Assignments - 75%
Paper - 25%

The grading scale for this course is:

A  =  90 - 100
B  =  80 - 89
C  =  75 - 79
F  =  score less than 75

Description of Grading Components

  1. If a student is absent for a regularly scheduled examination, the student can take a makeup examination within 1 week but the highest grade a student can earn is 75%.  An examination may not be taken before the scheduled date.  All material given in this course will be tested during the major examinations.
  2. A writing assignment will be given during the semester.  The writing assignments will be 450-500 words in length, typed, and cover some facet of respiratory care patient assessment.  A working session at Writer’s Corner is recommended. The assignment is due on a specified date and after the date, the assignment will be “late” and subject to the 75% maximum rule.  Assignments will NOT be accepted later than 7 days from the due date. Failure to submit a paper will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment. When submitted, your paper will be automatically checked for plagiarism. Papers with plagiarism of 25% or more will be awarded a grade of "F".
  3. Total possible course points may change as assignments are added throughout the semester.
  4. At least 10% of the questions on major exams will come from the reading assignments.
  5. Weekly quizzes will be given on Tuesdays. At the end of the semester, one (1) quiz grade will be dropped.
  6. The "Get Ready" TMC game will be played on Thursdays. At the end of the semester, the winner of the game will have an additional quiz grade dropped.
  7. Nothing in this course will be curved.
  8. Rounding of score will take place as follows:  0.5 will round up to the next highest whole number, ex. 74.5 = 75.  74.4 will NOT round up.

Testing Procedure

All exams will be administered using Respondus Lockdown Browser to ensure exam integrity.

During the testing period, the student may take a break, however, no additional time will be allowed for the test.  Only one student at a time may leave the testing room.  After completion of a major exam, the student will not be allowed to wait for the next class in the laboratory or hallway.  The student must either sit quietly in their seat until all students are finished or exit the building.

Calculators may be used during class and exams. The instructor will provide the calculators.

The Program has 1 "loaner" computer for testing. If your laptop fails to log in, the loaner will be available on a first-come, first serve basis. If the loaners is not available, the test will have to be taken at a later date, with the late penalty applied.

Remediation and Tutoring

The instructor will meet with students who do not pass exams or whose course grade falls below 75%, to arrange for mandatory remediation.  Both parties will develop a plan to gain better understanding of the information covered on the test.  The plan may include, but not be limited to:

  • mandatory tutoring session
  • research of exam topics
  • written discussion of topics
  • discussion of topics

Mandatory tutoring in the West Campus Student Success Center (WCB Building) will be required when a test is failed. The student will obtain a “prescription” for tutoring from the instructor and return proof of the tutoring session to the instructor when tutoring is complete. The student must complete the prescribed tutoring to be eligible to take the next exam.

Attendance

Any time a class is missed, it is the student's responsibility to obtain notes from classmates.  The instructor will be happy to discuss any information from the class, but the instructor's lecture notes are not available for copying.

A student who plans to succeed in this course should also plan to regularly attend all lecture and sessions.  Cases of excessive tardiness and absence will be handled on an individual basis and will require a counseling session.  Following this session, a departmental counseling form will be placed in your file.  The purpose of this form is to document that the student has been made aware that excessive absences are jeopardizing successful completion of this course.

In the event of virtual classes or quarantining due to Covid-19, all rules of attendance will apply. It will be counted as an absence if the student does not log on, does not activate the camera and/or is not dressed and sitting at a desk/table. If the student logs on after the class has started, the student is "late". Proof of illness due to Covid-19 may be required.
