Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

Successful completion of Module exams

Successful completion of Exit-Final - described below

Assignment Percentages of Grade

  • Exit-Final  =  Must Pass to graduate (only 2 attempts allowed - refer to handbook)
    • Note: This is irrespective of a student's GPA. Failure of 2 attempts requires a student to re-enroll at a level just above their current NR/Texas certification level, if approved by the EMSP Program Director.
    •
  • Platinum's Computer Based Testing (CBT) exams determine class letter grade (A,B,C, or F)
    • Data indicates that students with an overall percentile score of 91% or higher have the greatest probability to pass the National Registry exam on the 1st attempt. Therefore, students who achieve and maintain an overall CBT percentile score of 91% or higher (with "Good" and/or "Excellent" scores in all testing categories) = letter grade of "A"
    •
    • CBT grade equivalents used to determine letter grade for those who do NOT have a percentile score of 91% or higher:
      • "Excellent" = 88% (B)
      • "Good" = 78% (C)
      • "Not Good" = 65% (F)
      • "Poor" = 0% (F)
    • Once opened, CBT exams may be taken as often as desired. The highest score will be recorded in Blackboard.
    •
  • Summary of course grading (as described above):
    • Pass Exit Final (refer to handbook)
    • Score an overall CBT percentile of 91% or higher
    • Maintain CBT category GPA letter grades above an "F"

Grading Scale:

  • A = 90.0% and up
  • B = 80.0% - 89.9%
  • C = 70.0% - 79.9%
  • F = 69.9999% and below

Exit-Final Summative Exam

Students must successfully complete an Exit-Final, summative examination. Results of this examination are independent and irrespective of prior, individual course performances…an all-or-nothing type situation. Students must therefore understand, though your transcript may reflect a perfect 4.0 GPA, failure of the Exit-Final process constitutes failure of the entire EMSP program. As such, students WILL NOT advance to the National Registry as potential testing candidates (CoAEMSP standard IV.A.1). More details are provided in the EMSP Advanced Student Handbook provided in class. See your instructor immediately for questions and/or clarifications.

Attendance

Attendance is CRITICAL to your success in this class. Each class session contributes towards your course grade; which, due to the nature of this course, is HEAVILY weighted towards attendance and participation.

  1. Missing more than 4 class sessions will result in an F for this course.
    1. Early departure (defined as leaving, without permission, prior to the 2.5 hour mark of each 3-hour session) is considered an absence
    2. Tardiness (late) will be dealt with after a meeting with the student at the discretion of the instructor
  2. Absences 2-4 will each reduce your overall grade heavily (entire letter grades in some instances)
  3. The first absence is without penalty to allow for unforeseen emergencies – cherish this policy. Don’t waste it!

Skills Performance

Regular attendance is mandatory for successful completion of this course. No Skill can be failed more than twice for successful completion of this course

Calendar

A course calendar with dates will be provided on the first class meeting and is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. The specific skill listed for each session may change without notice. Be prepared for any skill as you would on an ambulance call. Note: Each session is 3.5 clock hours in length.

Additional Information

  • Amarillo College, EMSP Program Web Site
  •
  • Also, students are not automatically dropped from their class roster as a result of nonattendance. It is therefore the responsibility of the student to officially drop or withdraw from a course through the registrar's office. Failure to officially withdraw may result in the student receiving a grade of "F" in the course.

NOTE: The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule §4.10.

Extremely Important!

Failure of any one (1) of the Capstone semester courses/classes constitutes failure of ALL Capstone semester courses/classes, regardless of your letter grade in the other courses/classes. Refer to the EMSP Advanced Handbook’s Student Responsibilities sections, and the section titled: Capstone Semester (Your Final Semester and how to avoid an “F” in multiple classes).

See your instructor immediately for questions, concerns, and clarification if you do not FULLY understand this statement.

A student’s lack of FULLY understanding this requirement does NOT shelter them from its enforcement!
