Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Study of concepts related to the provision of perinatal nursing care for childbearing families. Content includes knowledge judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

     and regulations while caring for childbearing patients and families.

Expected Student Behavior

BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES:

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning.  In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructors, students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students.  Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class. Grading Criteria

GRADING CRITERIA/GRADE SCALE:

The following criteria will be used to determine the course grade:

            A=       89.5-100

            B=       79.5-89.4

            C=       74.5-79.4

            D=       60-74.4

Rounding of Grades:   

The final course average will be rounded to the tenth place. For example, a course average of 79.50% would be rounded to 80%. Additional examples of final course averages rounded to the tenth place include:  

  • 74.62% will be rounded to 75%, letter grade of C 
  • 74.38% will be rounded to 74%, letter grade of D 
  • 79.77% will be rounded to 80%, letter grade of B 
  • 79.499% will be rounded to 79%, letter grade of C 
  • 89.87% will be rounded to 90%, letter grade of A 
  • 89.478% will be rounded to 89%, letter grade of B 

There will be no rounding of individual assignment, quiz, or examination scores earned during a semester. This includes all didactic (classroom and online) and clinical scores as well as Evolve Specialty Exam, ATI Specialty Exam scores. For example, a 79.50% Module exam score will not be rounded to 80% and a Module Exam score of 79.499% will not be rounded to 79%. 

Two module exams = 70% of course grade (35% / module exam). Students who do not achieve a minimum passing score of at least 75% on a module exam are required to review the exam with the instructor before the next Module Exam.

One ATI Maternity Nursing specialty exam will be administered during the semester. The A.T.I. Specialty/Customized Exam is worth 5% of the classroom grade (Conversion score: %).

Final Exam will account for 20% of the grade.

All students are required to take the Final Exam.

Make up exams must be completed before the next scheduled examination.  An appointment may be made with the instructor to review the examination for 1 week after the classroom review of the module examination.

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Regular attendance (90%) is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.  Please review the student contract for specific requirements.

According to the Academic Progression and Graduation Requirements for All Students, “a student may repeat any nursing course or combination of concurrently enrolled nursing courses (class and concurrent clinical course) one time only…Students may not repeat a course more than once or continue with more than two strikes or course combination in total while enrolled in the program.  The term ‘repeat’ shall be interpreted to mean re-enrollment following withdrawal, audit, drop, or unsatisfactory grade.”  Amarillo College ADN Student Handbook 2016. 

Calendar

RNSG 1151/1160 Care of the Childbearing Family

Week 1- Course Introduction; Dosage and Solution

Week 2- Course Content, Clinical Orientation, and Clinical Rotations Begin

A finalized calendar will be provided. Clinical schedules will be provided during the first week of class. Calendars are subject to change. 

Clinical will take place on Mondays or Thursdays and Fridays. Assignment of clinical groups will be provided during the first week of class. Clinicals are 8 hours. The clinical experience will also consist of clinical simulation and it is mandatory for all students to attend. 

Additional Information

TIME ALLOTMENT:

This course  will consist of 1 Semester Hours of credit.  Included in the credit hour are 1 hours of classroom instruction and 1 hour of lab experience, which equals 16 hours of lecture and 16 hours of lab experience throughout the semester.  Lab experience will be comprised of audio-visual, classroom case studies, and A.T.I. online activities to increase the student’s understanding of the course content.

TEACHING STRATEGIES:

The course content will be taught by lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and audiovisual/online aids- including AC Online.  Instructors are Level 2 Associate Degree Nursing Faculty. 

PREREQUISITES:

BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, PSYC 2301, Math, RNSG 1209, RNSG 1105, RNSG 1301, RNSG 1331, and RNSG 1362.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Satisfactory completion of all assignments including A.T.I. case studies and Maternity Nursing specialty exam at the end of the semester. 
  2. Satisfactory average grade of 75% or above for course
  3. Regular class attendance of 90% or more
  4. All assignments must be submitted at required time.
  5. Satisfactory completion of online evaluations
  6. Class and clinical must be taken concurrently and satisfactorily completed in the same semester.  If a failure occurs in either class or clinical, both must be repeated in order to progress in the program.
  7. Assessment Technologies Institute (A.T.I.)

    A.T.I. assessments will be done throughout the semester. These assessments are utilized to establish readiness for National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX). All students will be required to complete the focused review based on the results of these assessments.

    The Focused Review must be completed by the due date listed on the respective course calendar(s) in which the student is enrolled. If the focused review is not completed, then the student will not be allowed to sit for the Final Exam and will receive a grade of zero (0) for the Final Exam.   9. Achieved at least 90% on the Dosage and Solution Test prior to administering medications in the clinical setting. Students may retake the Dosage and Solution Test only twice each semester. Students who do not achieve 90% or greater on the first scheduled test and first retake test will be required to review the questions they missed with the instructor and placed on contract for self-directed remediation. Students who do not achieve 90% or greater by the third attempt will fail the clinical course(s) that require the Dosage and Solution Test.1.

  10. Students who do not achieve a minimum passing score of at least 75% on a module exam are required to attend tutoring with the instructor prior to the course’s next Module Exam. Students who do not complete required tutoring will not be allowed to take the next exam in the course and will receive a grade of “0” for that next exam.

LABORATORY EXPERIENCE:

  1. Sixteen (16) hours of laboratory experience are required in this course.  The specific guidelines for each laboratory hour are located in the “Learning Activities” section of the course manual and on the course schedule.
  2. A.T.I case studies, patient reviews and adaptive quizzes are recommended to be completed.  The specific assignments and due dates will be discussed and listed on course calendar.
