Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Network technology emphasizing network operating systems, network connectivity, hardware and software. Includes implementation, troubleshooting and maintenance of LAN and/or WAN network environments.

Supplies

Students must have reliable access to a PC (personal computer) and the Internet. Computers are available in the CIS Department at Amarillo College and have reliable access to the Internet. Additionally, students will need: Binder, pen, pencil, scratch paper, and Cengage Unlimited Access Code during the assigned weeks.

Students will need a flash drive or external hard drive larger than 128GB to store Virtual machine images. If buying a flash drive, make sure that read/write speeds are greater than 100 MB/s

If using a personal laptop for this class, you must ensure it can run Virtual Box/VM Ware virtual machines. 8GB of RAM or more is recommended. Be sure you can turn on Hyper-V/AMD-V settings in the BIOS before purchasing a new laptop.

End-of-Course Outcomes:  Create a complex network with multiple layers of access and security; provide routine maintenance; implement troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures.

Expected Student Behavior

It is the policy of the Sciences and Engineering Division and the CIS Department that food and drink may be allowed in the classroom setting at the instructor's discretion. Still, food and beverages are not permitted in labs. Additionally, pagers and cell phones must be turned off or in silent mode in the classroom setting, and pagers and cell phones must be turned off while in labs.

Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their academic work. Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, or dishonesty may be excluded from class with a grade of F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College.

The faculty of the CIS Department reserves the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test by reproducing any specific section or the entire exam of the test in question. Any action that compromises the computer systems at Amarillo College, including but not limited to hacking or cracking, can result in a grade of "F" in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

This course requires work outside of the classroom to complete.

Grading Criteria

Final grades will be assigned as indicated below.

>89.5  = A
>79.5  = B
>69.5  = C
>59.5  = D
<59.5  = F

EVALUATION:

Your grade for the course is based on the following:

Attendance 20%  
Discussion Boards/Final Project Screenshots (Blackboard) 10% (5% and 5%)
Final Project Checklist and Presentation 20%  
Comprehensive Final Exam (Blackboard): 20%

90 questions, 90 minutes, 1.11 points per question, and will be given in a seated environment

All coursework and due dates are provided for each student at the beginning of the semester. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED without approval before the deadline. You are responsible for completing each assignment and homework and taking exams on the scheduled dates. This is NOT an online class, and participation in the programming and debugging exercises in class is a requirement for the course. 

Comprehensive Final Exam (Blackboard): The Final Exam will cover all Cengage Modules. It will have 90 questions and a time limit of 90 minutes. Each question is worth 1.11 points. It will be given in class with no exceptions.

Attendance

  • All Week 1 assignments must be completed by the end of Week 1 in order to be considered Present in the course. Failure to complete all assignments by this date may lead to an administrative drop from the course.
  • Check your email daily. The email address used by your instructor is the @amarillocollege.com email issued to each AC student. Your instructor will communicate important course updates, guidance, and hints via email.
  • Complete assignments by the scheduled date/time. There is a "no late work" policy, except in extreme circumstances.
  •  Attendance for seated classes will be taken during each class period. Attendance for online courses will be monitored by accessing log-in dates recorded in Blackboard and completing required assignments. Excessive absence or lack of participation may result in failure of the course.
  • Students should plan on spending a minimum of 10-12 hours per week on this course. Actual amounts will vary depending on weekly assignments and topic complexity.
  • Due to the nature of this course and the volume of work required to master this material, students are rarely successful when attempts are made to complete work during one or two days each week. Please schedule your time so that you can devote the appropriate energy and effort to achieve success in this course.
  • Your instructor may be contacted by email through the course on Blackboard. If Blackboard is not available, please see your instructor's contact info. In-person meetings or additional help are available if needed or desired. Please get in touch with me by email to set up a convenient day/time.
