Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) In order for this course to benefit the student and their musical training, regular trumpet practice is vital. The student is expected practice daily in order to be successful. Daily practice should be a planned out, disciplined part of your day as a trumpeter. It reasonable to practice 10-14 hours per week (2 hours per day) at minimum to make progress on the instrument and prepare all musical expectations for lessons. This can include daily fundamental practice, solos, etudes, improvisation, ensemble music, and any other assigned music. Growth as a musician happens by spending time experimenting and learning in the practice room as well as in the student's lessons.
The student is also expected to seek out live performances and recordings of professional trumpet players and spend time listening to professionals in all styles and settings of trumpet music.
The student is expected to be on time to lessons as well as warmed up and ready to play before the lesson. If the student is unable to be at their lesson or is running late for any reason, the student should contact the instructor in as timely a manner as possible before the lesson (when possible). It is at the discretion of the instructor whether the missed lesson is excused and whether the lesson will be made up at a later date. Unexcused absences from lessons will receive a failing grade for that lesson.
In lessons, the student is expected to be attentive and engaged as well as prepared on all assignments. Cell phone use should not be part of the lesson except when the device is being used in a capacity related to the lesson (metronome, tuner, etc.) or in case of an emergency.
The student will have a practice journal. This journal helps the student to be goal oriented in their approach to their practice time. This is also where the student will record all assignments and strategies worked on in lessons. The journal should be with the student in all lessons and their own practice time.
*The student is expected to secure their collaborative pianist for Music Recital performances and Juries in a timely manner. The student should communicate with Dr. Lin and have a copy of piano parts, clearly indicating in writing when the performance will take place and which piece(s) will be performed.
The student should take care to always have all necessary materials with them for their lesson.
Each week's lesson will be graded, based upon attendance, performance in lesson, and amount of weekly practice. Final grade will be based on weekly lesson grades, practice journal, performances of assigned literature, recital and jury performance (required), on the following scale:
A=90-100%
B=80-89%
C=70-79%
D=60-69%
F=Below 60%
Lesson Grades count 75% and jury grade 25%.
*The second to last lesson of the semester, the student will perform their scales exam. The grade for that exam will take the place of the weekly lesson grade for that week. This exam can be taken earlier in the semester if the student chooses to do so.
Attendance in lessons is a requirement for the course. Be on time and be prepared with all necessary materials for each lesson.
*See the above "Expected Student Behavior" section regarding situations where the student is unable to attend their lesson for any reason.
The student will have weekly one-hour lessons. This time is assigned on an individual basis.
Students will perform at least once on trumpet in "Music Recital" during the semester. This performance will be planned on an individual basis. Here are the possible dates:
Fall: Thursdays September 21, October 26 (NATS only), November 2, November 16 (piano only), & December 7 in the Concert Hall Theater
Monday December 11th- Juries
