Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisites

Course Description

A foundation studio course exploring drawing with emphasis on descriptive, expressive and conceptual approaches. Students will learn to see and interpret a variety of subjects while using diverse materials and techniques. Course work will facilitate a dialogue in which students will engage in critical analysis and begin to develop their understanding of drawing as a discipline.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1. Describe visual subjects through the use of accurate and sensitive observation.
2. Generate drawings which demonstrate descriptive, expressive, and conceptual approaches.
3. Utilize varied materials and techniques with informed aesthetic and conceptual strategies.
4. Demonstrate an appropriate level of professional practice, including safety, craft and presentation
5. Analyze and critique drawings verbally and/or in writing.
6. Relate drawing to design, art history and contemporary artistic production.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are required attend class, be on time and not leave early, must give attention, follow directions, meet deadlines, show professionalism, discipline, courtesy, respect, participation, and cooperation.

Grading Criteria

Grading Schema:
A = 89.5% - 100%; B = 79.5% - 89%; C =69.5% - 79%; D = 59.5% -69%; F = 0% -59%
There will be drawing assignments, critiques, tests, journal reviews, and a group assignment.

Attendance

No more than 2 class periods may be missed without approval from the instructor. After two “free” absences, the final class grade will be reduced 3 points for each unexcused absence, and you will be advised by the instructor concerning continuing or withdrawing from the course. With permission absences may be made up by attending other sections of Design 1, with note from the other instructor. Written official documentation will be required to prove any circumstances that may be considered excused absences.

Additional Information

All grades will be averaged together.  Drawings will be graded on following instructions, the quality of the drawing technique, composition, and neatness. There will be grades for two reviews of the Drawing I Sketch Book. Instructions for the sketch book are posted for the course ion the content page n BlackBoard. All drawings in Drawing 1 will be monochromatic (black and white and gray media). Most class periods you will draw objects “live and in front of you” in the classroom or out on location. You normally will not draw from magazines, books and photographs, unless otherwise assigned. Your required drawings will be drawn on only one side of 18” x 24” drawing paper. You must print your name, assignment title, and date completed on the back of each drawing. Newsprint paper will be used to protect and prevent smearing. It will be cover-flapped by taping with at leaste two tabs of artist tape (no other kind of tape) at the top of the drawing. Do not tape on the sides or the bottom.

All drawings or sketchbook-journals not picked up by the end of the semester become the property of Amarillo College.
