Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) For more information on Drop and Withdrawal Policies, please visit the Registrar's Office Web site.

Tests
All testing is done online in VHL. You will see them in the VHL Calendar. Click when ready to take. They are all timed. Not every student always get the same tests.
Tests must be submitted by the deadlines. Although tests may be available after the deadlines, it is your responsibility to complete on or before the deadlines. Only students with approved college directives explicitly stating that tests can be taken after a deadline may do so. If you take a test after a deadline, you will receive a zero.
You must use accents and other diacritical marks when they are needed. See "Accents" later in this Orientation.
Deadlines are given for each test and chapter HW under each module of the course. The professor will not remind you of the deadlines. They are given now and you are expected to plan your calendar accordingly.
DEADLINES ARE NOT EXTENDED FOR ANY REASON!
A deadline is the last possible second you can turn something in for a grade. If you go over - even by just a few seconds - YOUR WORK WILL BE LATE and will not be counted! Don't let this happen to you. Don't start an assignment or test at 11:30pm. Start early. Pace yourself. If you miss the deadline, that's it. THAT IS IT! The assignments will not be accepted late, even if just a few seconds. You are given the deadlines far in advance and it is your responsibility to meet them.
WARNING! If you are intending to cheat, don't. You will receive a zero on the test and you will reported to the dean. There is ZERO TOLERANCE for dishonesty.
Furthermore, you may lose your PRIVILEGE of taking tests online. This means that you will have to take future tests at the testing center of the professor's choice. It may be very far from your residence/work, may not be open late or on weekends, schedule by appointment only, or simply refuse to make an exception to allow you to test. Your dishonesty precludes ANY negotiation on which testing is chosen.
Students are required to take all tests at school while being proctored by their high school teacher/facilitator or other approved proctor unless written permission is given otherwise by your Amarillo college professor.
Course Structure:
·Engage in conversations using level-appropriate grammatical structures including narrating events that take place in the past.
·Demonstrate understanding of level-appropriate spoken Spanish produced by Spanish speakers of diverse origins.
·Write simple to moderately complex sentences using level-appropriate grammatical structures and organize them into cohesive paragraphs.
·Read and comprehend level-appropriate authentic texts.
·Identify and discuss traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic world.
·Compare and contrast the traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic word with characteristics of their own culture.
NOTE: You are graded on your ability to use the grammar and vocabulary covered in the course, including SPAN 1411. If you are a native or heritage speaker, be sure to use this grammar/vocab! DO NOT use vocab/grammar that has not been covered! It is IMPOSSIBLE to measure your progress (and grade your work) if you do not SHOW that you can use the grammar and vocabulary covered. No re-dos or second attempts are possible so be sure to do the work correctly the very first time.
Communication
You have enrolled in a college-level language class so high standards of grammar and spelling are expected in all written communication, whether in email, discussion boards, or some other medium. This applies to communication in English and Spanish.
It is expected that errors will occur in Spanish, but rules of capitalization and punctuation should be followed at all times.
In email, please be sure to include a specific topic in the subject line. Always sign your email with your full name and class as the professor's email is not specifically tied to this course.
The best ways to contact the professor are email to tjaltanero@actx.edu (best and preferred) or phone -- 720 474 5555. Please note that NO TEXT MESSAGES are permitted. If you send a text message you will not receive a response. It's a landline...
In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .
If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".
Academic Honesty:
Students are responsible for adhering to the highest standard of behavior when it comes to honesty and plagiarism. A student who engages in scholastic dishonesty which includes but is not limited to cheating, copying and pasting answers from any source, plagiarism, the use of online translators, and collusion, will receive an F for this course. Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. STUDENTS WHO ARE GUILTY OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY FACE THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPULSION FROM AMARILLO COLLEGE. THIS WILL BE PERMANENTLY ON THE STUDENTS TRANSCRIPT, WITH LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES INTO THE FUTURE, BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY.
Review the section on academic dishonesty in the Amarillo College Handbook and in this course in Blackboard under the tab labeled 'Academic Dishonesty'.
Students are required to take all tests at school while being proctored by their high school teacher/facilitator or other approved proctor unless written permission is given otherwise by Instructor Barton. Students are to take all tests and quizzes CLOSED BOOK. NO HELP. Students are required to sign an honor statement, swearing they will not cheat in any way on assignments and tests.
Minimum Technology Requirements
Minimum Technical Skills
As part of your online experience, you can expect to utilize a variety of technology mediums as part of your curriculum:
Accents, Capitalization, Punctuation
Accents, where required, must be used. If you don't use them, not only will you be marked wrong but you will also look "cheap" as if you spelled "don't" as "dont", "you've" as "youve" etc. That's not very college-like so please be sure to use accents when needed.
In Vistas, it's pretty easy to do as there is a floating "bar" and you just click on the accented letter you want.
Punctuation, capitalization, and other grammatical conventions must be observed. You will see in your Practice and HW that you will be marked incorrect on THE WHOLE ITEM if you do not follow standard Spanish conventions. Practice (we have a lot of stuff assigned as Practice) is very good, well, practice, for getting into shape for doing well on the HW and Tests.

Make-up and re-tests
Since all tests are announced and available from the 1st day of class, there are no make up tests. Plan your calendar accordingly.
Re-tests are not given. Students are expected to demonstrate their mastery of the material on the initial tests only.

Course Grade
This is how your course grade will be determined:
Grade | A | B | C | D | F |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Percentage | 90-100% | 89.999-80% | 79.999-70% | 69.999-60% | 59.999-0% |
Monitor your progress
You can check your grades throughout the course by selecting the My Grades link in the menu.
Feedback for each assignment is given within one week of submission deadline.
Grades are not artificially raised to move students to a different final grade. The cutoffs are given above and are not flexible. You have to earn a 90 or higher to get an A, not an 89. Why? Because this leads to infinite regress - if 89 is an A, what about 88.9? 88.5? 88? Etc. There must be a cutoff and those cutoffs are given above.
