Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. ENGL-1301-005 Composition I
Corequisite: INRW 0303 Prerequisite: Scores on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading and writing skills
Intensive study of and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasis on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement and style. Focus on writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating and critical analysis.

Expected Teacher Behavior:
Processing Grades & Syllabus Quiz includes Peer Reviews, Rough Drafts, Outlines or Argumentative Worksheets on your topic and the Syllabus quiz. The rough draft is due on the posted day during class. If it is turned in after class but on the day the rough draft is due, you will receive half credit for it. If you turn it in after the day it is due, you will not receive any credit for it. If you only have half a rough draft when the rough draft is due, you will only receive credit for half of it. For full credit on the peer review, you will need to do the peer review during the class it is due. If you get the peer review done by the writing center after the class day but before the due date of the paper, you will receive full credit for it. There is no other way to receive credit for the peer review. These will count for 15% of your overall grade.
Grammar Quizzes There will be one grammar quiz on blackboard each week that each student needs to take. You can take them on your own time before the due date of each week. You will have three attempts to take each quiz and the highest grade will be recorded. There will be a combination of multiple choice and short answer. You can take it up to three times but may have to wait for me to grade it before you retake due to the short answer questions. These will count for 15% of your overall grade.
Expository Research Assignment You will be given a list of interesting topics and have to find three credible web sources that explains the topic. You will compile a Works Cited, in MLA, and c ite the information in an interesting document. Pay close attention to the works cited page. This is where a lot of your grade will come from. This will account for 10% of your grade.
Journals each week you will complete a journal that includes some kind of response to lectures, notes from the handbooks, a response to a reading or some other prompt. There will be specific types of sentences that you will have to pick out for each week’s Journal. These will be due at the end of the week on the desired due date. These will account for 15% of your overall grade.
Essays
Precis Rhetorical-Analysis You will read an article, and summarize it according to the rules set forth in class. You will then determine uses of rhetorical appeals and how the use of these appeals determine the effectiveness of purpose in the text. This is worth 15% of your overall grade.
Researched Argument You will research a topic of choice and write a unique argument for or against it using specific sources outlined in class. This is worth 15% of your overall grade.
Breaking Free Narrative You will write of a specific event that happened in your life that led you to break free of some type of bondage. This essay will be on your final which is worth 15% of your grade.
Major essays will be penalized 15 points for each day it is late; a day is a 24 hour period.
Re-write Policy Any of the major papers turned in on time that score a 69 or below can be resubmitted for a better grade. The student must first meet with the instructor and discuss the paper, and then the work can be revised and resubmitted within a week of receiving the grade. The highest grade achievable for resubmission is a 70.
