Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) BIOL-2402-MCC2 Anatomy and Physiology II

Course Description

Anatomy and Physiology II is the second part of a two-course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including the following systems: endocrine, cardiovascular, immune, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive (including nutrition), urinary (including fluid and electrolyte balance) and reproductive (including human development and genetics). Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides a hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

Student Performance

  1. Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system covered.
  2. Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue and organ functions in each system.
  3. Describe the interdependency and interactions of the systems.
  4. Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.
  5. Identify causes and effects of homeostatic imbalances.
  6. Describe modern technology and tools used to study anatomy and physiology.
  7. Apply appropriate safety and ethical standards.
  8. Locate and identify anatomical structures.
  9. Appropriately utilize laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware, physiology data acquisition systems and virtual simulations.
  10. Work collaboratively to perform experiments.

Expected Student Behavior

Grievance Procedure:

If a student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Biology Department Chairman (Dr. Richard Hobbs), the Dean STEM (Edythe Carter), the Vice-President of student affairs  (Dr. Tamara Clunis),or the interim college President, (Ms. Denise Skinner), IN THAT ORDER.

Food and Drink:

You may bring drink (covered or capped) into the lecture room. I do not recommend any open food or beverage containers in the lab rooms.

Cell Phones, Pagers and Smart watches

Cell phones and pagers are not prohibited; however, please be considerate of others.  Please keep all cell phones and pagers on silent or vibrate mode.  If it is essential that you answer the call please step outside the classroom to complete the call.  Absolutely no call shall be taken during a quiz, exam or lab exam.  This will result in a grade of zero on that quiz, exam, or lab practical. Smart watches will NOT be worn during exams. 

TEXTING: Incidents of constant texting in class by a student shall be addressed by the instructor. If this habit is found to be an issue, the student may be asked to leave the room. Continual abuse of this policy will result with the student being referred to the Dean of Student Services.

Plagiarism / Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty or plagiarism will not be tolerated in this class.  Students caught cheating on a quiz, exam, or lab practical will be given a grade of zero on that assignment and referred to the Dean of Student Services. Please read very carefully: If your cell phone is out or seen at any time during a quiz or exam for any reason, your assessment will be taken up immediately and you will receive a zero for that assessment. If there is a similar repeated incident from the same student, they will receive an "F" for the course. In addition, DO NOT do anything which would appear to involve cheating. This includes the prohibited use of audio devices such as headphones or earbuds during exams. Any suspicious behavior during a test will result in a zero for the test and an "F"  in the course for a repeated incident.  

Special Notes:

This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.  Material included is intended to provide an outline of the course and rules that the instructor will adhere to in evaluating the student's progress.  Students are expected to read the textbook before and after the material is presented in lecture.

Grading Criteria

Testing / Grading For The Semester

 40% Lecture Exams:

  • 4-5 major exams consisting of multiple choice administered at the testing center.   Each exam will be contain 50-60 questions, with one lecture exam grade drop (lowest score). Lecture activities may be assigned on blackboard to account for 20 points of your exam if the scores are above 80%. In addition, all lecture activities will be averaged at the end of the semester and will be equivalent to a lecture exam that may/may not be dropped (dependent on the score).  Late submissions will not be accepted and will result in a zero. Please ensure that your personal device such as laptop, ipad, Macbook or chromebook  can open the lecture activities assigned using specific software such as softchalk and labster. If not, plan in advance to complete these activities on one of the on-campus computers. Extra time will not be given to complete these assignments if your personal device does not support the software.
  • If your course average score falls below 75%, you will be assigned to a tutor/tutoring sessions until you redeem an average score above 75%. You may also be assigned to a tutor at the discretion of the instructor despite a semester average of above 75%. 

15 % Lecture Quizzes:

  • 10-12 lecture or lab quizzes consisting of 10-20 questions.Homework may also be assigned for a quiz grade. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Late submissions will not be accepted and will result in a zero. 

17.5% Lab Exam:

  • Two lab exams will be administered (either in class or at the testing center) consisting of 50-70 questions (fill in the blank and short answers). In addition, 10 lab assignments will be combined to equal to one lab exam. The average of these 3 lab exams will be used to calculate your semester average and none of them will be dropped. 

7.5% Lab Assignments:

  • Each unit will contain lab assignments that will be completed for individual grades within this category. Ten of these assignments will be added together to count for one lab exam. These assignments will be administered during lab sessions with no make ups allowed if labs are missed. Late submissions will not be accepted and will result in a zero. 

20% Final Exam:

  • The final is a comprehensive exam consisting of 100 multiple choice questions administered in class or at the testing center (at the discretion of the instructor).

Grading:

Grades will not be curved nor are extra credit assignments allowed / given so please do not ask.

Grading Schema:

  • A = 89.5% to 100%
  • B = 79.5% to 89%
  • C = 69.5% to 79%
  • D = 59.5% to 69%
  • F = Less than 59.5%

Make-up exams will only be allowed under extenuating circumstances as defined by the instructor. Lecture and lab exams will be administered at the testing center or in class at the discretion of the instructor. There are only 6 extenuating circumstances which will warrant exceptions for make up exams. These include (1) Death and attendance of a funeral for a close relative/friend (2) Hospitalization for 24 hours or more due to illness or labor/delivery of the student (3) Jury duty (4) USCIS appointments (5) HESI exam appointments (6) Car accident on your way to take an exam (police report required) that pertains to the student. Sicknesses/illnesses, appointments with lawyers and court cases are NOT considered extenuating circumstances. Evidence/proof must be provided before make-up exams are allowed. One lecture exam,one lecture quiz and one lab assignment will be dropped.  Since there are only two lab exams, none of them will be dropped. The average of the two exams will be used to calculate your semester average. Bonus points may count for 3% of your entire grade. Case studies(if assigned) and the Final exam will NOT be dropped.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.  Attendance will be taken from the beginning to the end of the semester. Any assignments administered in class must be taken on time. If a student is more than 5 minutes late during an in-class assessment (any exam or quiz), the student may be allowed to take the assessment if they show up within an hour of the start of the assessment but a 20% late penalty will be counted against their grade. This decision to allow the student to complete the assessment is still at the discretion of the instructor. Tardiness (late) is defined as one minute or more after the scheduled testing time based on the classroom clock. If classes are officially canceled lecture and lab exams will be administered during the next class meeting.

100% Refund date: Mar 19, 2024.

A grade of W will be given for a student initiated drop or withdrawal on or before Apr 30, 2024. You may not drop or withdraw after Tuesday, Apr 30th, 2024 without permission of the Biology Department.  You must petition the department, in writing, for review of a late withdrawal.  This request will be reviewed by the entire full time faculty of the Biology Department.
