Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Student Performance

Course Requirements:

  • Compact, intense lectures will be presented at the beginning of each laboratory session.
  • Examinations will be administered online through Blackboard and/or Platinum Testing.
  • A cumulative average of 70% is required to pass this course.
  • Students are encouraged to read and thoroughly study assigned objectives and lecture notes PRIOR to the lab session in which the objectives will be covered.

Online Assignments:

  • Any weekly online assignments must be completed prior to the stated deadline on the Course Calendar.  Failure to complete any of these assignments will result in students receiving a grade of “0” for each assignment missed.  There are no make ups for missed assignments.

Academic Dishonesty:

All students are required to read and abide by the Student Rights and Responsibilities policy.  Violations, including cheating on examinations and plagiarism, will result in immediate dismissal from the EMSP Program.

Faculty may require students to demonstrate that graded assignments completed outside of class are their own work.

If a student is suspected of academic dishonesty or cheating, in accordance with Texas Administrative Code Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 157, Subchapter C, Rule §157.36(b)(20), “cheating and/or assisting another person to cheat on any examination, written or psychomotor, by any provider licensed by the department or any institution or entity conducting EMS education and/or training or providing an EMS examination leading to obtaining certification or renewing certification or licensure” may be subject to disciplinary action by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), also known as the department above.  This must be reported to DSHS!

Successful completion of this course requires a final cumulative exam average of 70% of higher.

EMSP Tutoring:

Any student whose cumulative average falls below 75% will be required to attend tutoring sessions to remain in the curse on a probationary status from week to week.  Refunds, if any, as per Amarillo College policy applies.  If tutoring is required, the student will be required to attend at least one, 60-minute session weekly until their cumulative average is 75% of higher.  Students will be counseled to drop, or receive a grade of F, if satisfactory progress is not made as evaluated by the course instructor.  Failure to satisfactorily attend tutoring sessions results in automatic dismal from the course as evaluated by the course instructor.

Expected Student Behavior

CIVILITY STATEMENT

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning.  In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor, students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students.  Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

ABUSIVE, VULGAR, LEWD, OR PROFANE SPEECH WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Students are also required to abide by the Student Code of Conduct found in the Student Rights and Responsibilities publication referenced above.

Grading Criteria

Grading Scale:

  • A = 90.0% and above
  • B = 80.0% to 89.99%
  • C = 70.0% to 79.99%
  • F = 69.99% and below

A cumulative average of 70% on all quizzes and exams is required to pass this course.

Quizzes:

Quizzes count 10% of the cumulative average.  Quizzes are due by the due date listed on the Course Calendar.  Quizzes not completed by the assigned deadline will result in the student receiving a grade of “0” for that quiz.  Quizzes cannot be made up.  No quiz grades will be dropped.

ACLS Algorithms:

ACLS algorithms count 10% of the cumulative average.  ACLS algorithms will be handwritten on the assigned day of lab according to the Course Calendar.  All wording, boxes, and arrows must be included in the handwritten algorithm.  Color shading is not required.  Failure to complete the handwritten ACLS algorithms on the day assigned in lab will result in a “0” for that assignment.  ACLS algorithms cannot be made up.  No algorithm grades will be dropped.

Exams:

Exams count 50% of the cumulative average.  Exams are due by the due date listed on the Course Calendar.  Exams not completed by the assigned deadline will result in the student receiving a grade of “0” for that exam.  Exams cannot be made up.  No exam grades will be dropped.

Comprehensive Final Exam:

The comprehensive final exam will count 30% of the cumulative average.  The comprehensive final exam is due by the due date listed on the Course Calendar.  A comprehensive final exam not completed by the assigned deadline will result in the student receiving a grade of “0” for that exam.  The comprehensive final exam cannot be made up.  The comprehensive final exam will be dropped.

Other Grading/Student Evaluation:

Per the Amarillo College EMSP Program Advanced Student Handbook & Internship Manual, students are required to meet other grading/student evaluation requirements listed.  These include, but are not limited to, the Cognitive domain, the Psychomotor domain, and the Affective domain.
