National Heart Month
Your heart is the center of your circulatory system, and is highly vital for your body to function properly. While heart problems can be hereditary, in most cases, they are preventable. Improving your lifestyle and changing your diet are two simple ways to counteract heart problems. Being aware of various heart problems and seeking timely treatment to prevent severe consequences are important parts of heart health.
However, heart problems are the leading cause of death, affecting millions of people every year. According to recently published data, approximately 90% of the 350,000 people who experience a cardiac arrest outside of the hospital each year will not survive. Less than half of people receive the immediate help that they need before professional help arrives.
During Heart Month, the American Heart Association is focusing on CPR to improve the cardiac arrest survival rate through lifesaving skills education and training. Damar Hamlin, NFL player for the Buffalo Bills, had his life saved by CPR. Damar is working with American Heart to encourage people to learn CPR. Amarillo College Center for Continuing Healthcare Education offers CPR classes for the public and AC staff & faculty. Sign up today and be the person who can save a life!
