At Amarillo College, we are classified as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). This means that a majority of our beautiful Amarillo College students classify themselves as Hispanic. According to datausa.io, Amarillo has a population of approximately 25% Hispanic individuals. This is cause for celebration! September 15 - October 15 is the designated month to celebrate our Hispanic friends and family and to show some extra appreciation for who they are and the beautiful culture that they bring to Amarillo. There are some fun events coming up to celebrate, and we would love for you to be informed and invited!
Personally, I absolutely LOVE making bread. White bread, wheat bread, sourdough, you name it. Now, if you're anything like my mother, who is very health conscious, you may be saying "NO BREAD, CARBS ARE THE ENEMY!" Well, carbs are a part of life and they are definitely delicious (still love you mom).
As we begin the Fall semester and the student buzz stirs on campus again, the doors to the Amarillo Academic Success Centers burst open to offer support and encouragement to all students. The Amarillo College Academic Success Centers are comprised of eight total tutoring centers: Those housed on the Washington Street campus (Math, Science, English, and General), the West Campus Academic Success Center, the East Campus Academic Success Center, the Hereford Academic Success Center, and the Dumas Academic Success Center. While the Academic Success Centers share the same mission to offer the best academic support for all Amarillo College students, each center possesses its own purpose, services, and unique culture.
Happy New Year, AC family!
Now, obviously, it is not January. But one could argue that most Americans (especially families with children at home, as well as employees, like yourself, that work in education) probably feel the rhythm of the calendar year, where a more real ‘beginning’ happens around mid-August. You know this better than anyone. I certainly felt this years ago when I was working with families with teens. Every year in early August, about 25 families would head into the New Mexico mountains for the weekend, where we would play, eat, rest, connect, and enjoy each other and each others’ kids before the start of the new school year. And throughout the weekend, we would take about an hour per day for families to spread out all around the campsite and have time for parents and children to reflect together, to share what they are hopeful for for the next school year, and maybe even to articulate some goals that rise to the top out of those shared reflections and desires for their family. And I would encourage them to get as specific as possible with any goals or habits that may come out of that. Because the truth is, by the time we reach October, whatever family rhythms, practices, and habits are in place and pretty much frozen for the remainder of the school year. We therefore had about 4-5 weeks to establish what kind of family we wanted to be for the year and what that might look like.
Summer is ending and students are heading back to school. Life is about to get even more hectic as routines change. Here are some key safety tips to help with the transitioning back to school.
Walkers: review your families’ walking rules
Bike riders: know the rules of the road, teach your child
During American Family Month, we celebrate the American family in all its shapes and forms. No two families are the same. Some are families we were born into and some are the families we've built along our path in life. Whatever your family looks like, this holiday is not about giving gifts, but about spending time with the people who matter the most. Here are some suggestions to help you celebrate your family this month, whether near or far.
Check here each month to see who is new to our AC Family.
Please help us welcome these new staff and faculty members as you see them.
