Attendance

ONLINE ATTENDANCE:

Regular attendance is necessary for successful completion of this course. The overall attendance policy is outlined in the Advanced Student Handbook provided to each student and is accomplished through discussion board participation, quizzes, exams, and classroom lab sessions. However, participation is critical to grades. Therefore attendance issues will affect your class grade as described below:

"Absences" from the online portion of this class result in missed cut-off dates and the subsequent inability to make up the lost grades! NOTE: Once an assignment is available (opened) to the student, papers, quizzes, exams, etc. can be turned in at any time PRIOR to the cut-off date/time.

Ample time has been given to complete assignments.Last minute scrambles to get things done are not wise time management practices for online courses. Be absolutely certain you understand: ONCE A UNIT IS CLOSED, late submissions will not be accepted! SCORES OF "0" (zero) WILL BE AWARDED.

Because of the built-in flexibility of online courses, exceptions to this policy are difficult to imagine. In a nut shell, TAKE A DISCIPLINED, MANAGED APPROACH to the time you commit to this course, and you will be well on your way to achieving your goals.

LABORATORY ATTENDANCE:

This is an ENHANCED online course, meaning a lab component is associated with the course. As such:

  • The EMSP program UNIFORM MUST be appropriately worn at all times while attending EMSP classes, labs, and events. Failure to do so will result in NON-admittance to that particular class/lab session with associated grade losses or penalties. In addition, students are representatives of Amarillo College while in uniform. As such, disciplinary action (up to, and including, removal from the program) will be taken against any student wearing the uniform inappropriately, or in an unfitting location, whether on (or outside) an AC class or event.
  • Regular attendance is mandatory for successful completion of this course. No Skill can be failed more than twice for successful completion of this course.
  • Missed skills evaluations may result in failure of the course. The make-up of missed skills is at the discretion of the instructor.
  • Additionally, students have the responsibility to attend laboratory class sessions. After two absences, a 5-point grade reduction will be assessed on your next EXAM for each missed day. Grade reductions for tardiness may be instituted at the discretion of the instructor.

Again, this class is an enhanced online course. Failure to successfully complete either the online, or lab portions of this course will result in an "F" for the entire course.

MAKE-UP POLICY:

This is extremely important: PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE BEGINNING AND ENDING DATES listed under the "calendar" tab associated with this course on "Blackboard"; especially the ending times. These are hard, cut-off points and will NOT be extended!

Also, Quizzes and Exams can only be taken (one) time and all have time limits. Be certain you will not be interrupted prior to taking them. If you are, your grade will reflect the point you exited the test or time expired. Quizzes and Exams are to be taken Closed Book.

DO NOT GET BEHIND!!! You cannot go back to catch up. Frankly put, NO MAKE-UP opportunities are available for quizzes, exams, or closed discussion boards! Remember though, all assignments can be submitted at any time during their scheduled availability.

Should you be late turning in a Concept Paper, a TEN PERCENT GRADE REDUCTION PER DAY will be assessed during the first 7 days the paper is late; after which, a score of zero will be awarded and the drop box closed. No submission attempt will then be possible.

CAUTION: As with the quizzes and exams mentioned above, YOU CAN ONLY SUBMIT EACH CONCEPT PAPER 1 TIME; SO, BE SURE YOU ARE FINISHED before clicking "submit" in the drop box!

Discussion assignments, posted after the due date, will also incur a TEN PERCENT GRADE REDUCTION PER DAY with this caveat: ONCE THE UNIT ENDS, NO FURTHER POSTINGS ARE POSSIBLE. THE UNIT'S DISCUSSION LINK WILL BE DISABLED! This policy is therefore dependent on the amount of time left in each unit. This means, for example, that a late Discussion Response, which always comes due at the end of each unit, has no grade reduction opportunity: Zero points will be awarded!

POLICY FOR STUDENTS REQUIRING TASP REMEDIATION:

Students that have been identified for TASP-required remediation must, according to Texas State Law, participate continuously in their TASP-remediation courses or they will be withdrawn for ALL course work, including the AH courses, through an administrative withdrawal for non-compliance.  If you have any questions about TASP-remediation, please call the Advising and Counseling Center at 371-5440; or Testing Services in the Student Service Center, Room 101, 371-5445.

WITHDRAWING FROM A COURSE:

It is the responsibility of the student to officially drop or withdraw from a course. Failure to officially withdraw will result in a grade of "F" in the course. Students are not automatically dropped from their class roster as a result of nonattendance. An email to the instructor expressing your desire to drop is required.

NOTE: The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule §4.10.

STUDENT GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:

A student who has a problem with the course or the course instructor should make every attempt to resolve the problem with the course instructor. If that is not successful, the student may appeal the decision of the instructor to the Program Director, the appropriate Dean, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the President - IN THAT ORDER.

COURSE SCHEDULE AND OBJECTIVES:

A detailed schedule showing the chapters to be covered for each session will be made available to the students. This schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. You are responsible for the lesson objectives at the beginning of each chapter.

Exceptions to the policies and procedures outlined in this syllabus will be dealt with on an individual basis at the discretion of the instructor.
