Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

Students Rights and Responsibilities

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Log in using the AC Connect Portal

In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Student Responsibilities: For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and student responsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook http://sites.actx.edu/catalog/notices/.

Scholastic Dishonesty: Cheating is defined in Webster's College Dictionary as "taking an examination in a dishonest way, as by having improper access to answers."  Improper access includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student's paper, copying from the homework solutions manual, or using any unauthorized sources of information while taking an exam or quiz.  If the proctor sees a cell phone out during any exam, the proctor will assume that student is cheating and the exam will be taken up and a grade of "F" will be received for the course.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES:  Students are expected to behave in the online environment the same way as in a traditional classroom. In order to receive credit for a course, all material listed on the syllabus must be covered. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Complaining about the pace will not result in less material being covered. Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student Rights & Responsibilities” will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to; denied access to online course, consultation with department chair and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

This class demands a great deal of time. Online courses often take more time than in-class delivery courses. Please expect to spend at least 10-15 hours each week on this course. If your other life commitments do not allow you this amount of time to spend on the course, you may want to choose another course or delivery method.

Grading Criteria

Grading Policy:  Your grade (90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C, 60-69% D, less than 60 F) will be determined using the following weights:

Online Homework (15% of your total grade): All homework will be completed online using the MyMathLab website. After registering, click on the "Assignments" button found on the homepage. Online homework must be submitted by 11:59pm CST on the due date. Help buttons will be available for each problem in MyMathLab, and you may rework problems multiple times until you get the correct answer. Assignment deadlines will be stated on the course calendar and indicated in MyMathLab with each homework assignment. Although this homework will be submitted online, I strongly recommend that you keep an organized log of written work to accompany each homework assignment to better learn the process of solving problems. Two online homework assignments will be dropped when calculating your overall homework average. I do not accept late homework.

Course Homepage Menu:

  1. To work on an assignment, click on Assignment, the assignment name and then the question.
  2. Each homework problem will usually have some of the following buttons to the right of the problem:  Help me solve This, View an Example, Video, Animation, Textbook, Connect to a Tutor, Print, Study Plan, Tools for Success, Multimedia Library and HTML eBook.

The Grade book will show you the assignment you have worked on, and the scores, and give you the chance to review any assignment.

Other Information:

  1. In general, you get 3 attempts on each problem. The following equals 1 attempt. Entering an incorrect answer on a short answer or numeric problem 3 times, entering an incorrect answer on a multiple choice problem 1-2 times depending on the number of answer choices, or using the Help Me Solve This button. (View an Example does not use an attempt.)
  2. After each attempt, you will be presented with the correct answer and the Submit Answer button will become a similar exercise (until 3 attempts have been used).  To get another attempt on your problem, click on Similar Exercise and a similar problem (same problem, different numbers) will appear.
  3. You can print your assignments, work on them away from the computer, and then return to enter the answers. On each problem, there is a button that will open a popup and ask if you want to print that page or the entire assignment.
  4. You do not have to "save" any work.  Once you click on the Submit answer and see either a green check mark or a red box with hints, the answers are saved.
  5. If you open a homework assignment and see a green check next to a problem, you have received full credit for that problem.  A red X means you have attempted the problem, but have not received any credit.  If you have both a green check and a red X, you have received partial credit.
  6. Be VERY careful when entering an answer.  There are instructions written in blue below most problems, if you do not enter the answer in the specified format or with the requested rounding, the answer will be considered incorrect.  Recall that entering an incorrect answer three times is one attempt.

Reviews: Exam reviews can be found right after a chapter's assignments in MML. Reviews were specifically designed to inform you of whether you are prepared for the exam. The midterm and final review needs to be printed and completed. You will turn in your review when taking the midterm and final exams on campus.

Online Tests (40% of your total grade):  Four online tests will be completed in MyMathLab by the due date(s) indicated in MyMathLab. Online tests will be timed. All online work (HW and Tests) must be submitted before 11:59pm CST on the due date.

Mandatory Tutoring: If your overall average falls below a 75 at any point in the semester, a minimum of 1 (one) hour must be spent in the Math Academic Success Center working on course materials. Information regarding what you will work on will be given throughout the semester.

Midterm/Final Exams (30% of your final grade; each worth 15% of the final grade):  The midterm and final exams are proctored exams (Not online).  These exams are taken at the Washington Street  Campus or can be proctored at an approved testing site. Hereford Campus and Moore County Campus have been used by students in the past. You will be required to provide a photo ID to take an exam.  If you need to take your midterm and final exam somewhere other than the Washington Street Campus math testing center, you must make arrangements with me by Aprill 1st! There will be a form in Blackboard for you to complete.  If you fail to complete the form by the deadline, you will be required to test at the Washington Street Campus.

Midterm Exam: Available April 11 - April 14 (due by 10pm on the 14th)

Final Exam:  Available May 2 - May 7 (due by 10pm on the 7th)

Keep on track:  All homework and tests can be started early. You may work ahead. Do not to wait until the last minute to start an assignment so that if you are ill or have technical difficulties you are not put in a bind.

Late Work: Deadlines are your responsibility. Due dates are posted on the MyMathLab website and in the class in Blackboard (through the AC Connect Portal).  However, because this is an online course, I can tailor it to your individual needs without disrupting the flow of the course.  If you need a deadline extension for a MyMathLab homework assignment (up to 2 days maximum), please don't hesitate to ask. I will extend ONE online exam (up to 2 days maximum) if you miss a due date. No extensions will be granted beyond May 1st.  Also, no extensions are available for written work, the midterm or the final exam.

Note: your current course average is displayed in Blackboard. The average showing in MyMathLab is not correct.
