Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Elementary concepts of geometry, probability and statistics, as well as applications of the algebraic properties of real numbers to concepts of measurement with an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking.

Supplies

(Optional) BLANK white printer paper, pencils, erasers, straight edge, five dividers and one three ring binder (1.5"- 2" recommended).

Calculator: Students will need a graphing calculator for this course.  The recommended calculator is a Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus.  Other forms of Texas Instruments or Casio graphing calculators will be permitted at the instructor’s discretion.  Note that no TI-89s or TI-Nspires will be permitted. There are FREE APPS available on your smart phone device that will resemble the ti-84 calculator. Please note, although you can use these in the classroom, you cannot use them on a monitored exam. You can also check with the Math Academic Success Center for calculators available for rental.

Internet Access: Students need access to a computer with a reliable internet connection to complete online homework assignments, attend virtual meetings and access to a printer to produce class notes (OPTIONAL) and other handouts.

Printer: Printers are available located in THE UNDERGROUND lab located in Ware Building. Hours of operation are located on their AC Webpage and at the bottom of your syllabus.

College ID: Students need an official Amarillo College student ID to scan into the Underground and Outreach Center and to present in the Math Testing Lab before each exam. If you do not have an ID, please know your student ID number.

Seesaw APP:Students will be asked to download and use the FREE communication app called SEESAW. This app allows for more effective communication between you and your instructor throughout the week.

Student Performance

After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics:

1. Apply fundamental terms of geometry such as points, lines, and planes to describe two and three dimensional figures.
2. Make and test conjectures about figures and geometric relationships.
3. Use a variety of methods to identify and justify congruency and similarity of geometric objects. 
4. Perform geometric transformations.
5. Demonstrate fundamental probability techniques and apply those techniques to solve problems.
6. Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
7. Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
8. Perform measurement processes and explain the concept of a unit of measurement.
9. Develop and use formulas for the perimeter, area, and volume for a variety of figures.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to behave in a manner that is supportive of a positive learning environment.  This includes academic honesty.  Cheating is not allowed in any form.  Students are expected to perform their own work and exams at all times. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated on any test or assignment for this course.  Plagiarism of any type will be considered academic dishonesty.  A grade of zero on the exam or assignment will be earned for any person found cheating or plagiarizing and the extent of the cheating may result in the student being dropped from the course.  This zero will not be used as a dropped grade.  In addition, students found cheating or plagiarizing may be subject to further disciplinary action as outlined in the Amarillo College Student's Rights and Responsibilities document.  

Students may NOT use a cell phone of any kind at any time while taking any test/exam in this course.  This includes the online tests and the proctored written exams.  The penalty for using a cell phone during a test/exam may be an immediate "F" in the course and possibly even being dropped from the course.  Please plan to leave your cell phone in a different location while you are taking your tests/exams for this course.

Students are expected to behave in a manner that is respectful toward AC faculty, staff, students, and/or property.  Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or with AC's "student Rights & Responsibilities" will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to: removal from the course, consultation with the department chair or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

Grading Criteria

Grading Criteria: The final grades of A (90-100), B (80-89) C (70-79), D (60-69), and F (below 60) will be computed as the weighted average of the earned grades from:

• Average of 4 highest Chapter Tests 20%
• Midterm & Final Exam 30%
• MML Homework Average 15% (TWO lowest homework grade is dropped)
• Reviews 5% (ONE lowest grade is dropped)
• Lesson Portfolio 20%
• Attendance & Notes 10% (Must score a 65 on Reviews or above to take exam)
• Extra Credit Notebook

Chapter Tests: You will take 5 timed chapter tests, one after each of chapters 9, 10 11/12, 13 and 14.  The four highest of these chapter tests will be averaged and the lowest dropped.  PLEASE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to the DUE DATES for these chapter tests which are posted on the calendar. If the due date passes and you have not taken your Chapter Test, you will get a zero for that grade.  I will, however, drop one lowest chapter test grade at the end of the semester.  

Midterm: due Tuesday, November 23th by 8:15pm.  You will be required to take a written Midterm at an approved testing center. If you are unable to come to the Washington Street campus Math Testing Center you can make arrangements to take it around your home. You must email your instructor the location and contact information of the testing coordinators at your chosen location at least TWO WEEKS prior to the exam due date.

FINAL: due Tuesday, December 14th by 8:15pm.  You will be required to take a written final at an approved testing center. If you are unable to come to the Washington Street campus Math Testing Center you can make arrangements to take it around your home. Makeup Policy: It is the policy of the Math Department that make-up exams will NOT be given. Only in extreme, verifiable, and documented cases will any exception to this rule be considered. If any tests are not completed by the deadline stated, a grade of zero will be awarded.

Homework:  Your online homework using MyMathLab will comprise your entire homework grade for this course.  BE SURE to pay CLOSE ATTENTION to the due dates and times for each assignment which are posted in the MyMathLab calendar.  These due dates are also part of your Calendar found under the main menu option in your AC Connect course.  There are weeks where you have multiple homework assignments due.  If the due date passes and you have not done your homework, you will get a grade of zero for that homework grade.  I will drop two lowest homework grades at the end of the semester.

 

Reviews:  Your online reviews using MyMathLab will comprise your entire review grade for this course. BE SURE to pay CLOSE ATTENTION to the due dates and times for each assignment which are posted in the MyMathLab calendar.  These due dates are also part of your Calendar found under the main menu option in your AC Connect course.   If the due date passes and you have not done your review, you will get a grade of zero for that review AND the following exam. You must score a 70 on your review prior to gaining access to your exam. I will drop one of the lowest review grades at the end of the semester. This includes the midterm and final reviews as well. 

Lesson Portfolio: An electronic portfolio will be developed during the semester. This portfolio will consist of a collectable of foldables and visual demonstrations of each chapters contents and how they relate to the TEKS. You will have class announcements and videos posted to help explain this portfolio that you are to develop. You will be submitting your portfolio electronically. I will grade your portfolios electronically and post your results in our course grade book.  Detailed instructions for the creation of your portfolio are found in the AC Connect course information documents found under the "Portfolio" tab of the Blackboard course main menu.  Please be sure to read these documents within the first three days of the course and complete them as you work through the course for this project as it is a large part (20%) of your overall grade in this course.

The notebook will be checked for the awarded extra credit points on  Sunday December 12^th   by video message through the seesaw app.You can find an example of how to send this video on your Notes Videos provided in the course. It will be a less than 2 minute video showing the notebook and all the aspects below.

This is the easiest and most organized method. You will not get credit for this notebook without showing work on how you are completing each and every MML assignment.

This course will be on campus AND will be OFFERED via tech support. Students may have the choice to log in virtually or attend on campus during the scheduled time.

Attendance Policy: Since this is an on campus course, your attendance is achieved by attending the course on the required days.  

Please stay current with your assignments and with class announcements.  Please respond promptly to e-mails and requests from your instructor.  Due dates for assignments, reviews, and all exams will be strictly enforced. Homework and tests not completed by the due date will earn a grade of zero.  It is easy to get behind in an online class; so stay motivated and do not procrastinate. The last day on which you may drop this course with a "W" is Wednesday December 8th by 8:15pm. If for some reason you stop working on the course and decide that you do not have time because of other commitments, you MUST contact your instructor  to obtain a signed "Withdrawal Approval Form" and subsequently turn in that form to the Ask AC/Registrar's desk by the due date listed above.  Approval to withdraw “W” is given based on the instructor observing a “good faith” effort on the part of the student to complete the requirements of this course.  Homework attempts done in MyMathLab, communication with your instructor via email, and test attempts in MyMathLab are examples of a “good faith” effort on the part of the student in this course.  Be sure to pay close attention to this matter as the semester progresses.

The Census date for this course is Monday November 1st.  Any student not in attendance in this course by that date will be administratively dropped from the course.  If you do not complete the first set of assignments prior to this census date, you will be dropped from the course. Students will be dropped from the course if they do not attend class and complete two of the first three assignments with at least a 70% prior to the census date.

This course will be OFFERED tech supported. Students may have the choice to log in virtually or attend on campus.

The course itself uses MyMathLab for delivery of the majority of the online instruction and content of the course.  It is important that the first time you access MyMathLab in this course, that you do it through your AC Connect /Blackboard Contemporary Math Course.   If AC Connect goes down, however, you may still do your homework by using Mozilla Firefox and typing www.mymathlab.com into the browser's address bar.  You will then be able to get into MyMathLab and continue your course work and homework assignments as usual.

MATH TESTING CENTER RULES

• Books may be placed on the bookshelf or in a hall locker before you request a test. Padlocks may be checked out in the Math Lab.
• An Amarillo College picture ID is required in order to take a test in the Math Lab.
• Once you have begun work on a test that is considered one attempt. You cannot leave the Math Lab and return to finish that test at a later time.
• In the testing room, please do not sit by someone with the same colored test. All purses must be on the floor.
• The Math Lab will not hand out a test less than one hour before closing time.

MATH ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER: The Math Lab personnel will pick up your test five minutes prior to closing time.

• The Math Lab hours are posted on the outside door, in this syllabus, and in the lab itself.
• Please come prepared. If you do not have a pencil, you may purchase one from the Math Lab for 25 cents.  Please bring exact change. Pens are not allowed on any test.
• Childcare arrangements must be made prior to testing. Children may not accompany students into testing room or be left unattended anywhere on campus.
• CELL PHONE CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
• Cell phones must be turned off as not to disturb other students who are testing. NO CELL PHONE use of any kind is allowed in the Testing Room. If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an "F" for the course!
