Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

This course introduces general nutritional concepts in health and disease and includes practical applications of that knowledge. Special emphasis is given to nutrients and nutritional processes including functions, food sources, digestion, absorption and metabolism. Food safety, availability and nutritional information including food labels, advertising and nationally established guidelines are addressed.

Student Performance

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the role of nutrition as it affects human health and well being.
  2. Understand the function of the major nutrients and their impact on the human body.
  3. Understand the role nutrition plays in disease prevention and treatment.
  4. Understand individual nutrient requirements as affected by stages of life, activity level, and/or disease.
  5. Evaluate popular claims and theories relating to nutrition.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of various special diet regimens.
  7. Understand the use of appropriate reference materials for obtaining food and nutrition information.
  8. Apply the principles of good nutrition in selecting a personal diet.

By the end of the course, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete the learning objectives stated in Student Performance/Learning Objectives above with a minimum of 60% competency level based on completion of the exams, projects, and assignments administered under the supervision of the instructor.

Expected Student Behavior

This class is being conducted in an online format. Our communication will be completed primarily through our course email and Bb online format. This is a different setting from the traditional classroom-based lecture course; nevertheless, I expect each student to conduct him/herself in the most professional manner.

  • Disrespect for any person, such as personal attacks in weekly comments or simply being rude toward fellow classmates or the instructor, will not be tolerated. (You need to start practicing good, professional interpersonal communication for your future career; extremely dependent upon dealing with many different people in many different and possibly difficult situations...all of which must be handled PROFESSIONALLY. Start that practice here in our class with your professor and classmates.) 

Email communications should not be text-type abbreviations or lingo, but complete sentences with appropriate grammar and spelling.

There will be 8 unit exams worth 40% of your overall grade. The remaining 60% will be derived from the Mindtap assignments, online quizzes, and Bb assignments.

89.5 - 100 = A
79.5 - 89.4 = B
69.5 - 79.4 = C
59.5 - 69.4 = D
59.4 or below = F


You should be checking in to Bb and Mindtap a minimum of three times per week to complete assignments, quizzes, and exams.
