The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

BIOL-2401-025 Anatomy and Physiology I
Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including cells, tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses. Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF THIS COURSE:
By the end of the semester, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all the identified learning objectives (LO's) with a minimum of 60 percent competency level, based on completion of assigned materials.
LO's are found at the beginning of chapter ppt's and on the opening page of each chapter in the textbook.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
There is much information to be covered during this 8 Week course. Therefore, you should be prepared to attend every class and keep up with assignments and their due dates. If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course, zeros for assignments will continue to be given for non-submissions. You will most likely receive an “F” for the course. A grade of “W” will only be given for student-initiated drops or withdrawals on or before the withdrawal deadline. The date for which is available from the AC campus calendar.
Please make sure to fill out the required form & obtain my signature, to be formally withdrawn from the class.

There will be NO MAKE UPS on assignments, quizzes, or tests past the posted due dates due to absences.
CHEATING: Do not give any indication of cheating. This involves performing "questionable" activities during exams, use of lecture/personal notes, cell phones, texting, crib sheets, books, etc. Suspected cheating on any assessment will result in a zero for the grade and possible expulsion (removal) from the class.
SAFETY: The student will be expected to follow the safety rules and to notify the instructor immediately if any accident occurs. While the risk is minimized as much as possible, there is the potential for contact with electrical appliances, heating elements, sharp instruments, chemicals, and organic materials, some of which may be biohazards. Any student deemed to be jeopardizing the safety of others will be asked to leave.
FOOD/DRINK: Food and Drink consumption are restricted in the Lab Room due to personal safety concerns. Beverage containers with spill proof lids/screw caps are acceptable in lecture rooms.
CELL PHONES/PAGERS: *Notify instructor if need arises to have it "on" otherwise should be out of plain sight.
Please show common courtesy to your fellow students and your instructor and either turn off phones, or place on “silent” mode during class. If you have a pressing need, please excuse yourself quietly and take care of it outside the room. No cells phones out in plain sight or audibly on. It is a sign of disrespect to be "on your phone" during periods of lecture and I will ask you to stop.
COURSE CONTENT & GRADING:
A weekly LEC textbook chapter quiz (submitted electronically to BB, typically two chapters depending on weekly lecture content). Students will have the opportunity for (3) attempts on each quiz up to its due date. The highest grade earned will be recorded.
Bi-weekly LAB Quiz/Mini-Practical (In Person) covering content specific to Lab discussion.
Weekly LAB Exercises from Lab Manual (submitted electronically to BB via DropBox).
Unit Tests covering LEC and ppt content (submitted electronically to BB).
Weighting of Grade Average:
75% Lecture [15% on chapter quizzes, 40% on maximum of 7 unit tests, & 20% Cumulative Final Exam]
25% Lab [7.5% on lab quizzes/mini-practicals, 7.5% on lab assignments & problem-based studies, & 10% on Final Lab Practical]
Any discrepancies in BB grading/gradebook must be brought to my attention via e-mail within one week of posting for corrections.
Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require special arrangements in order to meet course requirements, should contact Disability Services (SSC 119, ph 371-5436) within the first two weeks of class.
Any Tech Supported portion will require that you be self-motivated and have a designated study structure.
It is expected that you will attend the classroom lecture/lab session live, in person, as no recording/live stream will be available (see schedule).
Where to Begin: Class Orientation Folder
Review the calendar at the beginning of the course, and try to outline a realistic schedule for yourself, which fits into your weekly schedule. I have included some flexibility in the course structure to accommodate schedules, but there are hard deadlines for all assignments. It is more critical than ever that YOU take on the responsibility of managing assignments according to the schedule.
Science courses in general require at least 3 hours of study for every hour spent “in class”. Some students require more, some less, but the point here is that you need to be prepared to spend some additional time on the material in this course!
Suggestions for each unit:
At the beginning of each week/chapter, review the content as posted on Blackboard. Guidelines include the following:
Read the chapter content from the textbook; look up words you don't know the meaning of and write down their definitions.
Look for content videos (YouTube) on topics which need further comprehension.
Complete the weeks lab exercise(s) in the lab manual. Submit those assignments by due dates.
Review the questions on the study guide at end of chapter to prepare for the quiz/test.
Review material for quizzes & tests (Tutoring center is available & I have office hours to assist in clarification).
Review content areas/topics where you performed poorly on quizzes and unit tests.
Be Prepared for Unit Tests, as these account for about 40% of total course grade.
Other considerations to increase your success in the course:
Know specific diagrams/models that are included in the readings and PPT’s, which I explicitly identify.
Make sure you can label those diagrams correctly and you understand them fully.
Form a “study group” with fellow students. You can use online chats, face-to-face meetings, internal emails or discussion threads to communicate with members of the study group. Utilize the Underground basement of Ware or common areas in science lab building.
Schedule study time away from distractions to get the most out of your time (only study in increments of 30 minutes at a time).
Students should log into the course and check email at least twice daily
Complete course assignments weekly as designated by calendar.
Expect to spend several additional hours per week on course content OUTSIDE of scheduled class times.
You are expected to complete quizzes and tests without the use of notes, textbook or other materials, just as if you were in the classroom. Cheating may give you a better grade, but it does not serve you in the end…….after all, learning the material is in your best interest and is the point of this course! Nobody wants to be medically treated by someone who cheated and may not fully know finer details.

LECTURE GRADES: 75% of overall course grade
Chapter Quizzes:
Does not use BB Respondus, is timed, is repeatable until due date, maximum of 25 questions (FIB, MC, SA format) highest score recorded in grade book. Up to 25 points/quiz. All quizzes comprise 15% of course grade. (*Lowest quiz score will be dropped).
Unit Tests: [Unit Test review material is available in LEC testing content folder (ie. study guides for each unit test)].
Maximum of 75 questions, primarily MC format. Up to 7 unit tests comprise 40% of course grade. (*Lowest test score will be dropped).
*If you make less than a 70 on any unit test, you are required to obtain tutoring from the SASC (Science Academic Success Center). Tutoring can be obtained Remote/In Person and needs to be scheduled in advance (spots fill up fast, so book early). The SASC website has online scheduling/reservations for booking. You may also schedule a study session with instructor prior to taking the next test. You will not be allowed to take the next test until after verification that you have received tutoring.
Final Exam: *A comprehensive/cumulative exam. A review will be made available just prior to end of term.
Proctored, timed, & maximum of 150 MC questions. Delivery via traditional paper format & in person. Comprises up to 20% of course grade. The final exam will be conducted during week 8 as posted in the Amarillo College Master Calendar.
LABORATORY GRADE: 25% of overall course grade.
Laboratory quizzes/mini-practicals will only be available in person during lab hour, typically every other Thursday (drop lowest)
Laboratory assignments submitted online (e.g. Lab Manual Exercises: Ex.) (drop lowest)
Final Laboratory Practical during week 7 (up to 100 points).
-A comprehensive Lab Practical review will be made available just prior to exam (Lab practical exam will not be dropped).
Labs will be conducted in person on campus.

A = 89.5 – 100
B = 79.5 – 89
C = 69.5 – 79

*Grades are not curved (Hence the multiple categories of *drop grades).
**There are no extra credit options or assignments (Track your **Grade Progress and Prepare accordingly throughout the 8 weeks).
***At the start of Week 3, I will "Turn-On" the drop lowest grade in each of the respective categories. The AVG depicted in "My Grades" will be accurate and up to date with the submission and grading of assignments. This way, you will always know where you stand, academically.

MANDATORY TUTORING & DEPARTMENT POLICY: WARREN HALL 110
In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any unit test (excluding the Final Exam) must complete a mandatory tutoring session with an SASC tutor. Mandatory tutoring requires that students must schedule a tutoring time with the SASC by either calling (806 345-5536), going to the online scheduling portal, or visiting Warren Hall 110.
The center will do its best to accommodate a students' schedule within the hours of operation. This may require plenty of advanced notice by the student as time slots fill quickly. Upon arrival at the SASC, students must inform staff that they are required to take mandatory tutoring. The first instance of mandatory tutoring will be for 30 minutes. Subsequent instances of mandatory tutoring will be for 60 minutes.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:
If a student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try and resolve any such problems with the instructor. If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Department Chair (Dr. Hobbs), Dean of STEM (Edie Carter), Vice-president of Academic Affairs (Dr. Clunis), then the AC College President, (Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart) IN THAT ORDER.
Science Enrichment Center in Warren Hall 119 is available for study groups, free tutoring, and practice practicals. USE IT!! Hours will be posted in each classroom.

Weather Closing Policy:
If Amarillo College campuses are closed because of inclement weather, an official announcement will be made through all local television stations and KGNC radio. The message will also be posted on the college website and a recorded message on the College’s main telephone number (806) 371-5000. I will also post an "Announcement" in BB course.
Morning closings will be announced by 6:30 a.m. Decision's to close or change afternoon/evening classes will be made by 3:00 p.m. If a decision to cancel classes or close a campus is made during the day, students will be notified through the media and AC website. Additionally, I will send out an "Announcement" in the BB course. If no announcement is made, the College is open as normally scheduled.
