Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Calculator: Students will need a graphing calculator for this course.  The recommended calculator is a Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus. Note that no TI-89s or TI-Nspires will be permitted. There are FREE APPS available on your smart phone device that will resemble the ti-84 calculator. Please note, although you can use these in the classroom, you cannot use them on a monitored exam. You can also check a calculator out for the semester on the 3rd floor of the Ware Building while supplies last.

Internet Access: Students need access to a computer with a reliable internet connection to complete online homework assignments, attend virtual meetings and access to a printer to produce class notes and other handouts.

Printer: Printers are available located in THE UNDERGROUND lab located in Ware Building. Hours of operation are located on their AC Webpage and at the bottom of your syllabus.

College ID: Students need an official Amarillo College student ID to scan into the Underground and Outreach Center and to present in the Math Testing Lab before each exam. If you do not have an ID, please know your student ID number and have an alternate photo id available.

Student Performance

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1. Explain and model the arithmetic operations for whole numbers and integers.
2. Explain and model computations with fractions, decimals, ratios, and percentages.
3. Describe and demonstrate how factors, multiples, and prime numbers are used to solve problems.
4. Apply problem solving skills to numerical applications.
5. Represent and describe relationships among sets using the appropriate mathematical terminology and notation.
6. Compare and contrast structures of numeration systems.

Expected Student Behavior

POLICY ON CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM:  Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. Students that cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test will receive an automatic “F” in the course.  This grade will go on your permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones, copying or leaving the Math Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test.  This includes working together on tests in MyMathLab.
 
BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES:  Students are expected to behave in the online environment the same way as in a traditional classroom.    In order to receive credit for a course, all material listed on the syllabus must be covered.  The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met.  Complaining about the pace will not result in less material being covered.  Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student Rights & Responsibilities” will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to; denied access to online course, consultation with department chair and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

Grading Criteria

The final grades of A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), and F (below 60) will be computed as follows:

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD / EXAMINATIONS:  There will be graded homework assignments, lesson activities, exam reviews, five chapter exams, midterm and final. 

HOMEWORK:
Homework will be assigned online using the http://pearsonmylabandmastering.com/ website, which you access through our course in Blackboard or directly from the site.  It is your responsibility to complete these assignments by 11:59 p.m. Central time on their due date. At the end of the semester, 1 homework grade will be dropped.

LESSON ACTIVITIES:
Activities such as discussion forums, exam reflections, etc. will be assigned and completed in Blackboard.  They can be accessed through the weekly lessons.

EXAM REVIEWS:
Exam reviews can be found right after a chapters assignments and right before an exam in MyMathLab. There is no limit on how many times you can work through the review. You must pass your review with a 70% or higher to be given access to the exam. Reviews were specifically designed to inform you of whether you are prepared for the exam following. Once again, you must make a 70% or higher on your review to be given access to your chapter exam.

One of the lowest grades from this category will be dropped from your average at the end of the course to assist with any times you may have been unable to complete a review, although you will not be allowed access to the exams without achieving a 70% on your review first. No reviews will be re-opened or late submissions will be accepted.

You will also be given Midterm & Final exam written reviews to assist in the written portion. They must be completed and turned in to the testing center before you will be able to your midterm and final exams.

EXAMS:
Five chapter exams will be taken online and graded electronically.  These online exams will be due by 11:59 p.m. Central time on the due date. Your lowest one exam will be dropped at the end of the semester.  Students scoring below a 70 on an exam will be required to get help from the Math Outreach Center or instructor before taking the next exam.  

MIDTERM/FINAL EXAMS:
A midterm and final will be given during the semester.  These two tests must be taken at the Washington Street Campus Math Testing Center or at an approved testing site.

The available days to complete the midterm and final exams are listed below.  Students will be required to let the instructor know what testing site they plan on using to complete the midterm and final exams.  There will be an opportunity to do this in AC Connect after the semester begins.  Once the midterm and final exams are completed, they will be kept on file at Amarillo College.

Midterm: September 19, 20, or 21

Final: October 10, 11, or 12

Only under extenuating verifiable circumstances and at the instructor's discretion will you be allowed to complete the midterm or final after the posted due date.  You will receive a grade of “0” on the Midterm and Final if you fail to complete it by the due date without making prior arrangements.  No exceptions!!!

LATE WORK/EXTRA CREDIT:
Deadlines are your responsibility. Due dates are posted on the MyMathLab website and in the class in Blackboard (through the AC Connect Portal).  Late work is not accepted, so please use your time wisely and feel free to work ahead if needed.

No extra credit is given.

Expectations and Requirements for this course

Every online class is different; it makes sense to outline my policies and expectations so that each student is well informed as they begin the class as to what will be required of them.

1. This is a difficult course! Online classes are not necessarily more difficult than in-class courses, but they require self discipline and motivation. You will be expected to learn the material through reading the textbook, reading the instructor notes, and finishing the homework on MyMathLab
2. You need access to a computer with a reliable internet connection and a dependable printer to produce class notes.  By signing up for an online course, you are communicating that you have access to such tools.
3. This class demands a great deal of time. Online courses often take more time than in-class delivery courses. Please expect to spend at least 5-20 hours each week on this course.  If your other life commitments do not allow you this amount of time to spend on the course, you may want to choose another course or delivery method.
4. Deadlines are your responsibility. Due dates are posted on the MyMathLab website and on the syllabus.
5. Technical difficulties happen. If you are kicked out of an exam, email me immediately!  I will do my best to reset your exam in a timely manner.  Please don't panic, I am here to work with you.  However, completing online exams a few days ahead of time ensures that if you have any technical difficulties, we can take care of them before the due date.
6. You are responsible for getting help when you need it.  On the MyMathLab website, there are power points, videos, and step by step tutorials you can access for each homework problem you complete.  Take advantage of it!

MATH TESTING CENTER RULES

• Books may be placed on the bookshelf or in a hall locker before you request a test. Padlocks may be checked out in the Math Lab.
• An Amarillo College picture ID is required in order to take a test in the Math Lab.
• Once you have begun work on a test that is considered one attempt. You cannot leave the Math Lab and return to finish that test at a later time.
• In the testing room, please do not sit by someone with the same colored test. All purses must be on the floor.
• The Math Lab will not hand out a test less than one hour before closing time.
• The Math Lab personnel will pick up your test five minutes prior to closing time.

• The Math Lab hours are posted on the outside door, in this syllabus, and in the lab itself.
• Please come prepared. If you do not have a pencil, you may purchase one from the Math Lab for 25 cents.  Please bring exact change. Pens are not allowed on any test.
• Childcare arrangements must be made prior to testing. Children may not accompany students into testing room or be left unattended anywhere on campus.
• CELL PHONE CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
• Cell phones must be turned off as not to disturb other students who are testing. NO CELL PHONE use of any kind is allowed in the Testing Room. If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an "F" for the course!
