Office Hours

I maintain an "open-door" policy.  If my office door is open, you are welcome in, without an appointment.  This is an idea of when my "door is open":  Normal hours will be Monday, 0900-1600, Tuesday and Thursday mornings 0900-1100, Wednesday from 1000-1600 (I have Paramedic Students in lab from 0800-1700, so I'm in and out of the office.  Text me to be sure that I will be in the office for you.) and Friday mornings, by appointment.

Throughout the week, I have meetings, appointments off campus, etc.  To avoid making a trip to the Academy for nothing, please feel free to text me to make sure I'm in the office before coming in to see me.  I value your time and gasoline that it takes to get to the Academy and it will never be an inconvenience for you to text me.

Student Performance

Student Conduct:

AMARILLO COLLEGE EMSP HANDBOOKS:  Amarillo College's EMSP Program has adopted an Advanced Student Handbook & Internship Manual, detailing expectations and requirements for all students.  The current Handbook is posted in this course's BlackBoard.  At all times, students SHALL conduct themselves in a in accordance with the provisions of the approved EMSP Advanced Student Handbook, as well as Amarillo College Policies.  Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from the course and Amarillo College.

This is a hybrid course, not an online course.

  • Hybrid Format:  This hybrid course requires intense time management, as students do not participate in traditional lectures.  Rather, students prepare weekly assignments outside of the traditional classroom setting and will only be scheduled on campus for weekly labs.  A question and answer session regarding each weekly assignment may be conducted at the beginning of lab; however, time does not permit the instructor to provide a complete lecture.  Accordingly, the instructor may review crucial/more difficult concepts at the beginning of lab, but lab time will be the major focus.
  • Successful completion of this course places a tremendous responsibility on the student to adequately prepare for course examinations.
  • Self motivation and self discipline are critical attributes for preparation as there will be little didactic interaction with the course instructor.

Course prerequisites:

  • All documentation for course admission must be turned in to the program director.
  • Proof of EMT registration completion with the National Registry of EMTs is mandatory no later than April 15, 2024. Failure to produce documentation of current EMT National Registry by this deadline will result in student dismissal from the EMSP Program.

Course imperatives:

  • Review Chapter Study Guide (will be posted on BlackBoard) to gain an overview of material.
  • Read the pertinent objectives prior to reading the assigned pages in the textbook.
  • Read, dissect, and study the posted assignments
  • Study the lecture notes that correspond to the reading assignments doing your own research and making your own notations as you proceed.
  • Use the PowerPoint presentations for each class session as an aid in your preparation. Do not rely solely on the PowerPoint presentations as a means of preparation for the exams.

Online assignments:

  • Weekly assignment must be completed prior to the deadline stated in each weekly assignment, together with quizzes and major exams.  Students will simultaneously have assignments in this course and their other EMSP courses, quizzes in this and other courses, major exams in this and other courses, as well as ongoing clinical and lab obligations.  Time management is crucial.
  • Closely follow time frames posted in the Course Calendar, as well as those listed in Weekly Assignments (posted in BlackBoard)

Late Work and Make-Ups:

  • Quizzes:
    • Quizzes are designed as "formative assignments," to help build subject-matter knowledge and to provide direction in mastering the subject matter.
    •  Students may take quizzes multiple times, with the limit being listed in Platinum Testing and/or Weekly Assignment Instructions.
    • Students' first attempt should identify existing knowledge baseline and assist in focusing and allocating study and preparation time.
    • Quizzes will not be re-opened after the closing date listed in the Course Calendar.
  • Exams:
    • The course includes four (4) equally weighted exams.  There WILL NOT BE a comprehensive final exam.
    • Exams will not be routinely reopened after they close.  Any decision to re-open an exam will be on a case by case basis, for sufficient cause and will be the exception rather than the rule.
  • Missing an exam deadline will likely result in a grade of zero.

Academic Integrity:

All students are required to read and abide by the Student Rights and Responsibilities policy. Violations, including cheating on examinations and plagiarism, will result in immediate dismissal from the EMSP Program.

Grading Criteria:

Assignment Percentages of Grade

  • Quizzes                   =    15% of final grade
  • Major Exams            =   85% of final grade

Grading Scale:

  • A = 90% and up
  • B = 80% - 89.9%
  • C = 70% - 79.9%
  • F =  below 70%

A student who will not complete a Major Exam according to the Course Calendar and Assignment deadlines must contact the instructor before the scheduled exam, if possible. Otherwise notify ASAP. If the absence is excused, the test must be taken BEFORE the next class session. Failing to follow this requirement will result in a grade of ZERO for that exam.  This ZERO will be averaged in to final grade.

  • There will be no make-up for missed quiz grades.
    • Quizzes are designed to be taken multiple times, with the highest score being posted to the gradebook.
  • No Exam grades, or Quiz grades will be dropped prior to calculating the student's final average.
  • Students should not expect their Final Average to be rounded up prior to grades being submitted to the Registrar.

When a student reaches 3 absences, or tardies, the Program Director will be notified by the instructor.

Complete reading assignments early. Staying ahead on reading and studying will pay off with great dividends. Falling behind will result in failure of the course.

Do NOT fall behind - Successful completion of this course will come to those that stay ahead in reading and studying.

The reading assinments are essential but they are only the beginning.
