Amarillo College is known nation-wide for their culture of caring and loving students to success. It’s an environment where no student feels left out and barriers are removed on a daily basis, even when it comes to the holidays.
For its 5th year, the Advocacy and Resource Center at the Washington Street Campus coordinates their annual Thanksgiving bag giveaway. There’s no need to apply, qualify, or wait around – 500 bags will be available to simply grab and go. The bag contains all of the traditional basics the student or employee of the college will need to be able to prepare a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner for their families. Although this project was initially created to focus on students, employees of AC are welcome to participate.
Throughout the month of October and November, the entire AC Family comes together as individuals or as a department to collect and donate all of the necessary items put together to make this project a possibility for those in need. Junior League of Amarillo & Canyon has partnered with the ARC and generously volunteered to stuff all 500 bags that contain everything from stuffing and mashed potatoes to a $10 gift card to use toward the purchase of a turkey. The bags will be distributed and available on all campuses on November 26th starting at noon.
The Advocacy and Resource Center team express their appreciation and gratitude to the entire college for coming together to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for other families. “We are only the coordinators of this event. It would not be possible without the help and support from all of the employees who care about the students,” says Leslie Hinojosa, Social Services Coordinator for The ARC.
