THE BADGER BUZZ

Global Diversity | Senegal

This past summer, I had the privilege of traveling to the western African nation of Senegal with 22 members of my Amarillo College family. Our days began with insightful lectures at the West African Research Center. We delved into topics like Senegal's unique position between Muslim and Western influences, the role of ethnicity in nation-building, inter-religious dialogue, the connections between the slave trade and U.S. history, and the vibrant art and culture of Senegal. In the afternoons, we embarked on exciting excursions to various sites. We visited the awe-inspiring Statue of Renaissance, explored the Museum of Black Civilization, stepped back in time at the House of Slaves on Goree Island, watched the devoted Muslims praying in the Mosque, and enjoyed the natural beauty of the Bandia Game Reserve.

Should I Use the 70-20-10 Rule for My Budget?

ECU members and all residents of the Texas Panhandle can practice saving using these budgeting basics.

70-20-10, or 50-30-20? If either of those numerical trios looks familiar to you, then it’s likely you’ve stumbled upon or sought out popular budgeting advice. Both 70-20-10 and 50-30-20 are elementary percentage breakdowns for spending, saving, and sharing money. Using the 70-20-10 rule, every month a person would spend only 70% of the money they earn, save 20%, and donate 10%. The 50-30-20 rule works the same.

National Book Month

Created in 2003 by the National Book Foundation, National Book Month is a month-long celebration of reading and writing. It is held each October and features a variety of promotional events around the country, not least an announcement of the finalists for the National Book Awards. If you are a lifelong reader or want to start reading something fantastic and new, National Book Month is the perfect opportunity to start a new book or a new chapter, to read banned books, to support others’ rights to read books, to support independent bookstores, to start a book club with friends, or to start writing a book of your own!

Vegetarian Recipe Month

If you're looking for a great way to boost your October health goals or just want to try a new recipe for Meatless Monday, this maple-miso glazed mushroom bowl will really hit the spot. It's quick, delicious, and a favorite in our home. The mushrooms have a great meaty texture and are packed with flavor, not to mention the added benefit of a little extra vitamin B.
