Amarillo College will pay tribute to the recipient of its 2015 Distinguished Alumnus Award, Ron Boyd, at a luncheon in his honor on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the Amarillo Country Club Ballroom.
The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and tickets are $40. Proceeds will support student scholarships at AC. Please call (806) 371-5107 for tickets or for additional information.
Boyd was named Distinguished Alumnus last spring and the announcement took the owner of Duncan and Boyd Jewelers by complete surprise.
“I was shocked and humbled by this recognition. Flabbergasted might be a better word,” said Boyd, who attended AC on a partial tennis scholarship from 1962 to 1964. “I expect an honor like this to go the scholarly and smart, so I thought, ‘why me?’”
That’s a question easily answered by even the briefest glance at an abbreviated résumé of the man who earlier this year completed a second term on the Amarillo City Council.
He chaired the Amarillo Area Foundation and has presided over the Golden Spread Council for Boys Scouts and Center City of Amarillo. He served on the Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation Board and as campaign co-chair for United Way.
Boyd has received many accolades for community service: Silver Beaver Award – Boy Scouts of America; Golden Nail Summit Award – fund-raising campaign director for the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts; United Way of Texas Helen Farabee Award, 1995 – exemplary statewide service; and 2009 Globe-News Man of the Year.
“Ron is the quintessential AC success story,” AC President Russell Lowery-Hart said. “This College was an important part of shaping his journey. He has had an important role in shaping our community. He is an inspiration for us all.”
