Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only have day classes or can I take night classes?
Day classes are offered from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Night classes are from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Day classes run Monday through Friday.  Night classes meet twice a week after the first semester.

Do I have to take all the classes?
Yes, you have to take all the classes as required to receive an academic award.

Where are you located?
The Welding Technology program is housed in the Manufacturing Education Center building on the East Campus of Amarillo College which is located at the "old Amarillo Air Force Base" east of the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.  Please refer to the East Campus map for directions.

Do I have to furnish my own tools?
Yes.  All students who are enrolled in the Welding Technology program are required to have all books, tools, and supplies in order to be successful.

Will I be a "certified" welder when I am finished with the program?
If you complete all required classes for the Welding Certificate and apply for graduation, you will receive a Certificate of Completion in Welding Technology from Amarillo College.

During your classes, you will learn skills based on the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 welding standards.  As a final exam for each skill, you will perform a bend test graded to AWS standards.

Most companies require employees to perform "on-site" welding skills tests administered by their own Certified Welding Inspector (C.W.I.).  For that reason, you will not receive A.W.S. qualification papers when you complete your Welding program, but you will be practiced enough to take the skills tests.
