Steven G. Smith has been chosen to become the next vice president of business affairs for Amarillo College. A former AC student himself, Smith brings extensive executive-accounting experience to the position.
Smith is presently vice president of accounting for multistate Summit Truck Group. Pending approval of the Board of Regents, he will fill AC’s vice-presidential vacancy after Terry Berg retires from the post at the end of March.
“AC is a very important part of the Amarillo community and I’m very excited about being a part of the College and joining its great tradition,” Smith said. “It was a great place to begin my educational journey, and I know it will be a great place to work.”
Smith served as corporate controller for Roberts Truck Center in Amarillo from 2007 until 2014, when the firm merged with Diamond International to form Summit Truck Group. Smith successfully managed the integration of accounting systems during the merger and was named Summit’s director of accounting.
In September of 2015, he became Summit’s vice president of accounting, a job that finds him more often than not at offices in the Metroplex. His home, however, remains in Amarillo, where his wife, Selena, teaches at an elementary school.
“Steve not only possesses tremendous business experience that will help us streamline and improve our services for everyone, but he is an AC alum,” AC President Russell Lowery-Hart, said. “His own journey mirrors those of many of our students; he understands their struggles and will help us adapt our policies and practices to better serve them.
“I am thrilled to bring Steve back into the AC Family,” Lowery-Hart said. “He is deeply committed to the people of our community. His heart for others and his mind for finance will make AC that much stronger.”
As vice president of business affairs at AC, Smith is charged with leading all business and business-related functions of the College, developing new and alternate funding sources, administering the AC Employee Benefit Program, and serving as treasurer of the AC Foundation. He will be responsible for all reporting functions to local, state, and national agencies on fiscal affairs.
Smith, who is originally from Logan, N.M., attended AC in 1999. He has two degrees from West Texas A&M University – a bachelor’s in finance and a master’s of business administration, the latter completed in 2006.
Before becoming immersed in the economics of large-scale trucking, Smith was employed in the banking sector, as a senior branch manager for Herring Bank; Branch manager for Woodforest Bank; and bankruptcy administrator for Amarillo National Bank. He also has experience as a strategic financial planner.
Steve and Selena Smith have two sons – Jake, 21, and Jordan, 14 – and a daughter, Sienna, who is 7.
