AC Strikes Gold at American Advertising Federation Awards Ceremony

Amarillo College struck gold and mined a few other precious gems Feb. 7 at the 2015 ADDY Awards.

Three AC students were doubly recognized at the annual event in which Amarillo’s chapter of the American Advertising Federation recognizes excellence in advertising.

In the student competition, Michelle Low, Katherine Pearson and Bethany Zalman each captured Best of Show or Special Judges Awards, then also garnered Gold ADDYs.

Low was Best of Show winner for “Mister Doyce Ad Campaign” in the Consumer category. She also won a Gold ADDY in the Integrated Campaigns category for the same project.

Pearson and Zalman each were awarded Special Judges Awards as well as Gold ADDY’s for poster presentations titled “Endangered Species” in the Collateral Material category. Pearson’s Special Judges Award was for Outstanding Illustration, and Zalman’s was for Outstanding Design.

Three other AC students received singular Collateral Material recognition at the event. Aaron Jones received a Gold ADDY for “Diamonds & Dust,” and Juan Pablo Bernal and Bethany Cates each received Silver ADDY awards—Bernal for “Tom Hanks of the 90’s” and Cates for “Envoy Typeface.”

Students were not the only AC representatives to come away from the event with hardware. Professional recognition went to Stefanie Carruth, graphic design specialist in College Relations, who was credited with designing a brochure for Amarillo Opera that won a Gold ADDY.

And Derek Weathersbee, instructor of graphic design, came away with three ADDY Awards—two Golds and a Silver. He won Gold in both Advertising Industry-Digital Advertising and Advertising Industry Self-Promotion. His Silver was for a logo he created for Yellow City Design Collective and submitted for judging in the Elements of Advertising category.

“I am so proud of the outstanding work our graphic design students and faculty are producing,” Victoria Taylor-Gore, who chairs the Art Department at AC, said. “They have a great team.”
