AC’s Brandon Martinez awarded a $1,300 SkillsUSA Leverage Scholarship
One of two students who in April were tabbed to represent Amarillo College in the SkillsUSA Texas Ambassador Fellowship Program, just received an additional award, one of only four presented to SkillsUSA members nationwide.

Brandon Martinez, a construction technology major, is the recipient of a prestigious $1,300 Leverage Scholarship, funds generously contributed by Robert L. Flint, a former Caterpillar executive and longtime SkillsUSA supporter.
The purpose of the Leverage Scholarship is to provide support for top students who have insufficient chapter, school or community resources to participate in Leverage, a national-level SkillsUSA leadership training program. A non-profit organization, SkillsUSA is a national partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.
Martinez and fellow AC student, Vania Esparza, each are serving one-year terms as SkillsUSA Texas Ambassadors, and as such, each will speak at three national events over the year ahead.
Having a pair of exceptional students step into the national SkillsUSA spotlight is especially gratifying for Ernie Sheets, coordinator for AC’s Construction Technology Program, whose fledgling program just wrapped up its inaugural year.
“These Ambassadors, and now this scholarship, are a testament to both the exceptional quality of our program and the dedication of our students,” Sheets said. “In just one year, our Construction Technology Program has made a remarkable impact, and Brandon’s success in particular exemplifies the immense potential of our students.”
SkillsUSA has been an integral part of career and technical education since 1965, constantly striving to enhance the nation's skilled workforce. Amarillo College's partnership with SkillsUSA has empowered students like Brandon and Vania to excel, providing them with valuable opportunities, mentorship, and recognition at both the state and national levels.
