STEVEN W. JONES HALL - WEST CAMPUS - NURSING & DENTAL HEALTH CENTER

The new building, Nursing and Dental Health Center, will be located at Amarillo College’s West Campus and house the Nursing and Dental Programs.  The proposed site for the new multistory center is located on the Northwest side of the Amarillo College West Campus. The new building will be on the West side of Building B and the northeast side of the Child Development Center. An additional parking lot will be located adjacent to the new center as part of this bond package.

The new building is meant to provide updated nursing and dental spaces to meet the increasing demand for education and training. The current programs are at capacity and the teaching and support spaces are not sufficient to meet the demand. The new building is anticipated to contain primarily specialized laboratory and clinic spaces. The building will add approximately 60,000 gross square footage (GSF) at the West Campus.

The building is envisioned to be:

  • three stories
  • located in close proximity to the current Allied Health Building and Buildings B and D
  • proposed total project cost is $10,800,000
  • in addition, $2.5 Million budgeted for renovation of Building B

    • skills labs
    • practice lab
    • simulation labs for students in a simulated hospital setting
    • a Reception/Waiting area for students and visitors to wait for services

NURSING DIVISION

The mission of the Associate Degree Nursing (A.D.N.) Program is to prepare competent, entry-level practitioners to meet community needs for registered nurses. The program strives to provide the quality A.D.N. graduates the community has relied on to fulfill workforce needs since 1970. The graduate of Vocational Nursing is prepared as a beginning practitioner to provide and manage legal and ethical nursing care in a variety of health care settings. Graduates meet the competencies of national and state agencies.

DENTAL PROGRAMS

Amarillo College has two programs available to students in the field of dentistry; Dentist Aide program and the Associate of Applied Sciences degree in Dental Hygiene.

The mission of the Amarillo College Dental Hygiene Program is to provide quality technical education leading students toward the profession of Dental Hygiene and to enhance the quality of life in our community through the direct provision of dental hygiene services.  Those services including patient education, disease prevention and therapeutic intervention to patients, to continue to provide the valuable community service to the patients of Amarillo, the indigent patients of the Amarillo Hospital District, and others throughout the area. Without the dental programs, the entire panhandle would suffer with lack of access for patients and lack of employees for dentists in the service area.

The Dentist Aide program at Amarillo College is designed to teach students the necessary knowledge and skills to assist dentists with patient care. The graduates will be skilled in a wide range of dental areas such as: Orthodontics, Pedodontics, Oral Surgery, Peridontics, and Endodontics. They will also have skills for managing the business side of the dental practice.

The Dental Health Clinic needs new spaces because the program will lose accreditation if the facilities are not updated to current codes and standards, such as:
  • Current teaching and laboratory facilities do not meet the needs of faculty. Better technology and demonstration capabilities are desired
  • It is more cost effective to construct new labs in a new building than to try and upgrade an older building to meet current standards
