Susan Burks

Professor Susan Burks began teaching Accounting classes at Amarillo College in January 1996 as part-time Supplemental Faculty . She graduated from Texas A&M University - College Station with a BBA in 1992 and from West Texas A&M University - Canyon with an MBA in 1994. She worked as a Staff Accountant at Mason & Hanger Corporation - Pantex Plant after graduating from Texas A&M. She then worked for Hastings Entertainment as Staff Accountant and later as Recruitment & Development Manager.

 

During her time at Pantex and Hastings, she continued teaching both Accounting and Business Management classes at AC as an Adjunct Instructor. In 2000, she joined the Amarillo College faculty as a Board Appointed 3/5ths Instructor in the Business Management Department. Mrs. Burks became a full-time Instructor in 2002. She has since been promoted in rank three times- 2006 to Assistant Professor, 2012 to Associate Professor, and 2015 to Professor. Over the years, Professor Burks has completed 45 graduate school hours above master's degree and obtained an Online Instructor Certification in 2012 from Eastern New Mexico University / Amarillo College. From 2000-2016, Mrs. Burks was faculty in the Business Management Department primarily teaching a variety of Business Management classes as well as Accounting classes when needed. She also taught AC First Year Seminar classes for several years. In 2016, she moved to the Business Administration Program and began teaching solely Accounting classes. Mrs. Burks has served Amarillo College as Faculty Senate President and as a member of multiple committees including Academic Affairs/Curriculum Committee, Commencement Committee, Faculty Handbook Chair, and others.

 

She enjoys volunteering in the Amarillo Community and has served on several nonprofit boards including the Amarillo College Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Junior League of Amarillo, Amarillo Symphony Guild, and Lone Star Ballet Guild. She is past Administrative Board Chair and Lay Leader at Polk Street United Methodist Church. She is past President of the Junior League of Amarillo, Puckett Elementary PTA, JubaDore Dance Club, and AHS Cheer Booster Club. She has served as Treasurer in many nonprofit organizations and booster clubs over the years.

 

Currently she serves as the Amarillo High School PTSO Treasurer, Amarillo Aggie Moms' Club President, and Vice President - Finance for the Amarillo A&M Club. She and her husband, Brad, have three young adult children- Elizabeth and Sam (twins), and Ben.
