Description:

In this cohort, we will read and discuss Small Teaching Online by Flower Darby with James M. Lang. This book explores the unit challenges of online instruction and shares the small teaching strategies that have proven to have a powerful effect on online classroom engagement and learning. This book applies to face-to-face, hybrid and online courses. It also provides helpful techniques for engaging students in online learning environments and offers practical suggestions you can use immediately. 

Professional Learning Outcomes (PLO):

In this PLCohort, participants will be able to

  • Discover how UDL principles can benefit a diverse student population. 
  • Use strategies to guide learning through engagement.
  • Select appropriate media and technology tools for the online course. 
  • Identify the primary aspects of building a community in the online classroom.
  • Apply the core principles for providing feedback.
  • Apply small teaching strategies to help student persistence and course completion.
  • Direct students to take ownership of their learning.
  • Connect new knowledge with student background knowledge.
  • Put deliberate effort into challenging yourself to keep growing in your online teaching abilities.

Deliverable:

At the conclusion of this PLCohort, participants will have engaged in many discussions over small teaching in the online environment. They will pick at least one strategy in the book and incorporate it into a lesson in the upcoming session. Participants will share a short presentation with peers showcasing how they used this strategy in their lesson. They will then complete a final reflection and future action plan.

How to Register for CTL Classes

  1. Go to https://acconnect.actx.edu/
  2. Under the Self-Service section, click WebAdvisor.
  3. Click WebAdvisor for Employees.
  4. In the upper right corner of the screen, click Log In.
  5. Log in with your ACNet ID and Password.
  6. Under Professional Development, click Register for Center for Teaching and Learning Classes.
  7. Click SUBMIT to access a list of courses being offered by CTL.
  8. Click the SELECT box to the left of the workshop for which you wish to register.
  9. Click SUBMIT again at the bottom of the page to finalize your selection(s).
