Former staffers to help ACs FM90 celebrate World College Radio Day
AC’s veteran disc jockeys will take turns reminiscing about their College experiences and playing their favorite tunes of yesteryear from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on FM90 — which is 89.9 on the FM dial.
“I told everybody to bring their vinyl, so we’ll be breaking out the turntable, for sure,” Amy Presley, audio media coordinator for FM90, said. “I think our listeners are in for a treat.”
Conceived in 2010 to celebrate the important contributions of college radio, World College Radio Day aims to raise both awareness and audience for the numerous college radio stations that operate worldwide.
The day has been dubbed The day student radio comes together around the world, a sentiment AC is taking to heart as FM90 staffers will be joined on Radio Day by students representing West Texas A&M University’s radio station, KWTS 91.1 FM.
The WTAMU station, known as “The One,” will show its unity by broadcasting live from FM90 headquarters at AC’s Gilvin Broadcast Center, 2408 S. Jackson St.
Presley says having KWTS in the mix not only helps raise the bar for the one-day celebration, but it serves to bridge the gap and promote networking between the neighboring broadcast programs.
As a capstone to the day’s festivities, listeners can stay tuned at 5 p.m. to FM90 for “When It Began,” a program that normally airs on Fridays and features an all-request retro format.
FM90 debuted at Amarillo College on March 15, 1976 as a “progressive country” station. Today, FM90 features alternative music and more. The station boasts 100,000 watts of power and a service radius of 70 miles, but the station also is available online, too.
