Lockdown

When there is a threat inside the building.

  • Avoid. Deny. Defend.
  • Lock all interior doors.
  • Barricade doors if possible. 
  • Remain locked down and wait for “all clear” from first responders.

Lockout

When there is a threat of hazard outside or nearby.

  • Get everyone from outside inside and stay inside.
  • Assist disabled people.
  • Lock all exterior doors
  • Be aware of your surroundings. 
  • Remain in the building and wait for an “all clear” from first responders. 

Evacuate

When you need to move people from one location to another.  

Sample evacuations include bomb threats, fires and interior chemical spills.
  • Exit the building immediately and calmly.
  • Shut the office door.
  • Assist disabled people.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Head to rally point – upwind and a safe distance from the hazard. (determined by Department Head)
  • Conduct a head count – is anyone missing? (If so, notify a first responder)
  • Refrain from re-entering the building until receiving an “all clear” from first responders.

Reverse Evacuation

When there is a threat or hazard outside and you need to get inside.

  • Immediately go to the nearest building and get inside.
  • Assist disabled people.
  • Conduct a head count – is anyone missing? (If so, notify a first responder)
  • Identify the hazard and take appropriate action.

Weather

When there is severe weather, including tornado, hail, or lightning.

  • If outside, go inside immediately. 
  • Assist disabled people.
  • Find interior/lowest part of the building. (Reference maps located near each building entrance)
  • Stay away from windows.
  • For added protection, get under something sturdy.  Cover your body with a blanket, jacket, backpack, etc.

 

 

Drop, Cover, Hold On

When there is a threat of an explosion.

  • Immediately go inside.
  • Shelter under furniture.
  • Cover eyes, ears, protect internal organs. 

Shelter in Place

When there is a HAZMAT incident outside (harmful chemicals or bioterrorism)

  • Immediately go inside.
  • Assist disabled people.
  • Seal the building or room the best you can, using blankets, etc. 
  • Amarillo College will work to get the HVAC systems turned off quickly to decrease the chances of exposure.
