ACs FM90 to celebrate World College Radio Day with former staffers
Conceived in 2010 to celebrate the important contributions of college radio, College Radio Day aims to raise both awareness and audience for the numerous college radio stations that operate worldwide.
This year’s theme is “Passionately Vocal, Seriously Local,” and Amarillo College will take the opportunity to showcase a number of former student staff members, several of whom have become local media celebrities.
“If you look at all the media outlets in Amarillo with employees who are products of Amarillo College, you can see that this is where we shine,” Mike Fuller, program director for FM90, said. “We are truly a local resource for media talent.”
Former AC staffers will take turns stopping by the station from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to reminisce about their College experiences and to play some of the music they enjoyed as student disc jockeys at FM90.
Additionally, FM90’s observance of College Radio Day will include a one-hour program about the importance and focus of college radio. Produced by collegeradio.org, the program will air from 2-3 p.m.
Finally, beginning at 4 p.m., Kari Foxx and Matt Michaels will co-host a College Radio Day version of FM90’s “When It Began,” a program that normally airs on Fridays and features an all-request retro format.
FM90 debuted at Amarillo College on March 15, 1976 as a “progressive country” station. Today, FM90 features alternative music and touts itself as “AC’s Cutting Edge!” The station boasts 100,000 watts of power and a service radius of 70 miles, but the station also is available online, too.
