Michael Kitten named Dean of Technical Education at Amarillo College

Kitten currently serves as Executive Director of the Hereford Economic Development Corporation, a position he has held since 2012. Additionally, Kitten joined the AC Board of Regents in 2016 as a non-voting member representing Hereford.

Kitten has held many impressive positions that have led to economic growth for both Hereford and the Texas Panhandle and is active with many organizations throughout the community to drive economic development.

“Given his extensive experience, Michael has been charged to not only enhance the great technical programs at Amarillo College, but also lead broad-based employer engagement initiatives leading to economic growth in the Texas Panhandle,” said Dr. Tamara Clunis, Vice President of Academic Affairs.

“I am passionate in my belief that economic development and education go hand-in-hand,” said Kitten. “The opportunity we have at Amarillo College is significant because workforce education, academically and otherwise, is imperative to the future of the economy of the Panhandle.”

Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart, President of AC, is eager to develop new business partnerships for the technical education programs to enhance the overall student experience.

“Michael is a prominent business leader who will be invaluable to enhancing technical innovations, as well as the effectiveness and efficiency of the college’s programs as we continue to develop new technologies and business relationships,” said Lowery-Hart.

Kitten’s seat on the AC Board of Regents will remain vacant until the AC Board of Regents appoints a new non-voting member from the Hereford Community.

“Michael has been a strong advocate for AC our students. He understands how to develop and strengthen partnerships to make both the College and our community stronger and will better equip our students to enter the workforce,” said Clunis.

Kitten is a product of community colleges having earned his associates from South Plains College. Afterwards, he attended Texas Tech University earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Production and a certificate in Public Management. Kitten brings to AC experience in logistics, safety, and environmental management. Additionally, he is a member of the High Ground of Texas and Panhandle Regional Planning Commission and many civic organizations.

Kitten will oversee the Technical Education programs at Amarillo College which include Harrington Aviation program, the Kritser Diesel Program, logistics and transportation, and industrial technology. Kitten will assume the role once held by Megan Eikner, who is leaving the college to pursue other interests.
