AC Chautauqua to Explore “Civil (Dis)Obedience” Oct. 14
Amarillo College invites the community to its next Chautauqua: Conversations About Be-ing Human event, “Civil (Dis)Obedience,” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Oak Room of the College Union Building on AC’s Washington Street Campus.
The discussion will explore questions surrounding obedience, dissent, civic responsibility and the choices people make when their individual convictions intersect with laws, institutions and society.
A panel of AC and West Texas A&M University faculty and staff will guide attendees through the evening’s conversation:
- Stefanie Decker, PhD, associate professor of History, AC
- Aaron Faver, assistant professor of government and politics, Social Sciences, AC
- Laura J. Mueller, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy, WTAMU
- Walter Adams, student learning licensure specialist, Nursing & Health Sciences, AC
“The Chautauqua series gives us an opportunity to slow down and have real conversations about questions that don’t always have simple answers,” said Dr. Robert Fulton, Chautauqua coordinator and associate professor of humanities. “Civil disobedience raises important questions about our responsibilities to one another, to our communities and to the principles we believe in.”
Attendees can expect engaging discussion, live music courtesy of the AC Music Department, refreshments beginning at 5:15 p.m. and a welcoming space for learning and connection. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Chautauqua: Conversations About Be-ing Human series is designed to create real conversations on real topics about being human. The fall series will conclude Nov. 11 with “In the Pursuit of Happy-ness.”
