Amarillo College Invites the Community to “Chalk It Up” Sidewalk Art Contest July 25

Amarillo College, Panhandle PBS and FM90 are inviting artists of all ages to unleash their creativity at the annual Chalk It Up sidewalk art contest on Saturday, July 25 at AC’s Washington Street Campus.

The free community event, now in its eighth year, will transform the Oeschger Family Mall into a colorful outdoor gallery as individual artists and teams create original chalk masterpieces on designated 8-foot squares.

Online registration is now open, and participation is limited to the first 40 individuals or teams to register. Artists may compete individually or as part of a team of up to four people.

The competition will take place from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by judging and an awards ceremony. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top entries, including $500 for first place, $250 for second place, $100 for third place, and $50 for the Fan Favorite award.

“The community has thoroughly embraced Chalk It Up,” said Kevin Ball, Amarillo College vice president of communications and marketing and CEO of Panhandle PBS. “Watching these incredible works of art come to life throughout the morning is a true celebration of creativity and community spirit. It’s an event that brings people together and showcases the remarkable talent we have in our region.”

A panel of judges from the local arts community, along with public participation in Fan Favorite voting, will determine the winners.

Spectators are encouraged to attend throughout the morning to watch the artwork develop and vote for their favorite creations. Families also can enjoy an amateur chalk-drawing area where children and adults alike are welcome to create their own sidewalk art. Chalk will be provided.

The Oeschger Family Mall is located between the Ware Student Commons and the College Union Building, just north of the pedestrian bridge spanning 24th Avenue.

Cold water will be available for participating artists, and food items will be available for purchase during the event.
