College receives CRLA certification for its tutor-training program

The Academic Success Division at Amarillo College is pleased to announce that it has been named a fully certified tutor-training program by the internationally recognized College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).

As a result, all Academic Success Centers across five AC campuses are staffed by CRLA certified peer and professional tutors.

“This is a huge honor and speaks to the great work of all our tutoring centers,” said Edie Carter, AC’s dean of stem and academic success. “Achieving certification means our tutors have met CRLA’s very high standards.”

For more than 30 years, CRLA has been a leader in learning assistance, reading, and academic support programs, with almost 1,300 members and over 2,000 certified training programs worldwide.

AC has multiple Academic Success Centers on its Washington Street Campus and one each at its East, West, Hereford and Moore County campuses. The College employs approximately 100 peer and professional tutors at those locations, along with eight supervisors.

The mission of the Academic Success Centers is to provide AC students with academic support and learning strategies through services, resources, and collaborations with faculty that allow students to become engaged, independent, and successful learners.

AC offers free tutoring on all its campuses, and students who drop below a 75 average in any class are directed to attend mandatory tutoring sessions.
