Texas Mutual presents $100,000 grant to support AC’s safety training efforts
Texas Mutual Insurance Company has awarded a $100,000 grant to Amarillo College (AC) to continue funding AC’s Safety and Environmental Technology program, which provides workplace safety and health courses for community employers, employees and the general public.
This is the ninth consecutive year that Texas Mutual, the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance, has given a $100,000 grant to the college to support its risk management program.
"We are extremely proud that Texas Mutual recognizes the value of our safety training efforts and has renewed this generous funding for another year," said Denese Skinner, interim president of Amarillo College. "We plan to put this grant to good use on behalf of the businesses and employees Amarillo College supports throughout the region we serve."
Amarillo College launched its risk management program in 2016 to provide training for increased safety awareness and to reduce work-related accidents and injuries. In 2023, the college provided safety training classes to more than 900 students.
The risk management program offers a wide range of courses relative to Amarillo’s workforce. Support from Texas Mutual has allowed for an expansion of course offerings ranging from mental health, first aid/CPR, OSHA 10 and 30, confined space entry, OSHA accident investigation and boom lift/scissor lift training to name a few. The college has now added courses in Spanish including OSHA 10 and 30, first aid/CPR/AED and fire extinguisher training.
"Texas Mutual acknowledges the vital role played by our community college partners in advancing our mission to build a stronger, safer Texas," said Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual. "Over the past two-plus decades, our commitment to these institutions and their communities has been fortified through grant funding. We take pride in sustaining our investment in the ongoing education of thousands of Texas employees.”
