Success for Justin Johnson is the Student Government Association at Amarillo College

SGA groupShotJust one year later, Justin is encouraging AC students, new and experienced alike, to give the same consideration to SGA that he did — for it’s an organization over which he now presides.

“I wanted to meet people, and I sure did,” said Justin, who last May capped his first year at AC by being elected SGA president. “Getting involved with SGA was one of the best things I ever could have done. Meeting people and being more involved doesn’t guarantee success in college, but it definitely gives you an edge, and everyone wants to succeed.

“That’s why I like AC’s new slogan that frames everything with ‘Success Is’, he said. “Success could be anything at all, like meeting new people or coming out of your shell. For me, Success is SGA at Amarillo College. I would love to see a lot more people get involved with us and experience their own versions of success.”

Justin and his fellow officers on the SGA executive board, using the theme “Adventure Awaits with SGA,” invite all AC students to participate in a full slate of SGA activities and events this fall. That includes SGA’s weekly meetings, which are at noon on Wednesdays in the College Union Building (CUB).

But you don’t have to join the organization to enjoy what it has to offer. SGA’s fall kickoff will be Movie Night, featuring a showing of Steven Spielberg’s adventuresome film The Goonies, at dusk, Thursday, Aug. 24, at the outdoor amphitheater on the Washington Street Campus (WSC). It is free and open to all.

SGA also will sponsor Fall Fest, a midday music festival for all AC students at the WSC Clock Tower. Fall Fest is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21 and features live music, food, games and more.

“I think it’s an amazing opportunity, like a mini-music festival,” said Manolya Alkhamis, SGA programming chair. “People can enjoy free food, music and fun before class, between classes, or after class — what could be better than that?”

And of course everyone is invited to SGA’s prospective member’s party — at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the CUB — where there is an excellent chance that Justin Johnson’s successor will be in attendance — whomever that turns out to be.
