When an operating room swings into action, surgical technologists are standing by, an important part of the team trained to ensure successful patient outcomes. The Surgical Technology Program at Amarillo College is designed to prepare students for this challenging career in one year. The program adheres to the standards developed by the American College of Surgeons, the American Hospital Association, the Association of Surgical Technologists, and the Association of Operating Room Nurses. The AC program is approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
Under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel, surgical technologists assist by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Surgical technologists assemble the sterile and non-sterile equipment, check to ensure it all is working properly, and make adjustments as necessary. As a surgical technologist, you will also help prepare patients for surgery.
